Exhibition showcases works of seven prominent South Indian artists

SINGAPORE: A new exhibition has opened in Singapore featuring the works of seven prominent artists from South India. It’s the first such exhibition and it’s organised by 'The Gallery of Gnani Arts’.

The event is meant to raise awareness of the uniqueness of South Indian contemporary art which observers said is looking for a place in the global market.

Artist P Gnana is based in Singapore. He believes, South Indian artists like him, are getting internationally recognised, because their work is authentic.

He said: "The uniqueness of South Indian masters and painting is pure. It does not mix with any Western influence. We can see the root, the South Indian masters have very strong line drawing. They have very strong foundation."

With those unique selling points on the rich culture of South Indians, such works have increasingly fetched better prices at international auctions.

Gnana continued: “We have very good masters and very good collections who can be internationally recognised. Now almost all of the artists are internationally recognised and they are also in auctions.

And observers said it’s about time these masterpieces, get the attention they deserve.

Vidhya Gnana Gouresan, a curator, said: "There had been a lot of Indian art collectors from all over the world. But when you talk about Southeast Asia, it has been undervalued for a very long time. Now it is not that it had improved in a tremendous manner but it had improved a lot compared to five years ago."
