The unconscious man rescued from Bedok Reservoir on Monday was not suicidal -- he was actually drunk.
Ng Kim Seng, 52, a storekeeper, was found floating face up in the reservoir and rescued by nearby joggers and canoeists at around 5:30pm.
Speaking to The New Paper from his hospital bed, Ng revealed that he was drunk and had no idea how he ended up in the water. He added that he had no intention of killing himself.
"I was facing some problems and had decided to stay at home to drink my sorrows away," said the Singaporean in Mandarin.
He lives with his wife in a three-room HDB flat in Bedok North Street 3. The couple have no children.
"I only know that I drank a lot, almost an entire bottle of hard liquor. I was very drunk," recalled Ng, who did declined to reveal what problems he was facing.
"I felt very hot and decided to take a walk to Bedok Reservoir. It's just 10 minutes away from my home and I often jog there."
He could not recall what time he started drinking or when he headed to the reservoir. The only thing he remembers was walking alone along the reservoir, holding a bottle of alcohol in one hand.
"When I woke up, I was already in hospital," said Ng.
"I was too drunk to know or remember anything, but I wasn't trying to kill myself," Ng told the same paper.
"I must have slipped and fallen into the waters."
He also could not remember being rescued and carried onto shore.
When he woke up in the hospital bed, his spinal cord hurt and he couldn't move as he was wearing a neck support.
"I had hurt my spinal cord in the past. The doctors told me that they had spotted some irregularities there and need to observe me for a few days. It hurts quite a bit now," he said.
There were fears of another drowning at Bedok Reservoir Monday evening when witnesses spotted Ng floating face up in Bedok Reservoir.
He was taken to Changi General Hospital after he was rescued.
The police said they are looking into the matter.
