DEATH FOR SINGAPOREAN SINGLE MOTHER FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

SHAH ALAM, March 18 (Bernama) -- The Shah Alam High Court today sentenced a

Singaporean single mother to death for trafficking in drugs at the Low Cost

Carrier Terminal (LCCT), two years ago.

Judge Noor Azian Shaari delivered the sentence on Noor Atiqah M. Lasim, 27,

after the defence failed to establish reasonable doubt on the charge under

Section 39B (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The accused, who worked as a legal assistant in the republic, was alleged to

have trafficked in 342.1 grammes of heroin and 30.3 grammes of monoacethyl

morphine at the LCCT on Jan 5, 2009.

When delivering the decision, Noor Azian said the prosecution had proven a

prima facie case against Noor Atiqah.

After evaluation of the facts and statement, the court found the accused had

custody and control of the drugs and called for her defence.

According to Noor Azian, the defendant''s statement that the bag containing

the drugs belonged to another person was difficult to believe and unreasonable.

Noor Atiqah, mother of a six-year-old girl, was represented by counsel

Mohaji Selamat while Wan Zuraida Wan Nawan was deputy public prosecutor.

She is just the deliverer. Just like many other drug pushers, they are being used. Kill her will not stop the drugs from being circulated and sold. Try catching the real culprit. the drug lord that has been making the real $$$. For all you know, it maybe some of the datuks. datins, politicians etc.
May GOD have mercy on her. Her poor daughter is going to be an orphan growing up with a stigma that her mother was sentenced to death for drugs. Something that she will have to live for the rest of her life.

Do you really think they are not doing that? But, until they do catch the "kingpin" and all the ones who will take his place, we have to keep a handle on the drug problem.

Besides, its not like this caught the lady by surprise, she knew what the risk was. If I told you that, if by walking through that door you will most likely die, will you do it?

And yes, that is a bad thing for her daughter... Which really makes me even more upset at the mother. I guess to some people money and drugs are just more important than their own kids well-being.

And e best part is, e best lawyer in e country would represent these kinda cases for free wt legal aid assistance....whereas junkies n "mules" face death sentence riteaway wt no mercy??? Find it very ridiculous....some might nt even be aware thers such "stuff" they're being asked to transport...God knows best....wait till it happen to their own family members or ppl they know, thn will feel e pain n grieve.....Honestly, those wt $$$ or "names" tats got "good connections" gets away easily....huhhhhhhhhh......

two issues here: capital punishment and a credible and 'just' justice system, CP serves as a deterrent for such crimes and necessitates a competent justice system, the nature of the punishment being irreversible (no such thing as resurrection) the system must ensure that it prosecutes the guilty and sets free the innocent, there is an ongoing examination of appeal cases in the US where a sizeable number of decisions have already been reversed due to new evidence being presented; that is why in such scenarios it would be best if the maximum penalty is life imprisonment, but in countries such as malaysia and singapore culture plays an important role in the choice of death as the most severe form of punishment

and i have to go against you, drug trafficking as well as human trafficking really deserves a greater punishment, in cases of murder you ruin one, two, three crimes but in trafficking you ruin millions of lives, yes the victims may still be alive but they have been poisoned and thus will perpetuate violence and crime in society. Yes it is often recommended that murder and trafficking have the same punishment, but murder sentences can be subjected to mitigating circumstances (insanity, self-defense) whereas trafficking is unforgivable in the sense that its damage is intangible, deep-seated, long lasting and may ruin the very fabric of society.

A life sentence is more humane than a death sentence!!!
      • eyng 1 year 2 months ago
of course, nothing is less humane than putting a person or any living being to death
    • TruthSearch  •  1 year 2 months ago
WHy don't change it to life imprisonment instead of hanging.
      • SeA TeA 1 year 2 months ago
I agree.. Sentenced to death is extremely not fair for her...Publish in Singapore news or paper so that Singapore Goverment at least could look into it and do something for her, please save your singaporean citizen from the death sentence.. PLSSSSS.. May Allah protect her.. AMIN
      • Nguess Who 1 year 2 months ago
What's fair for you, sentence to death other citizens rather than singaporeans, that is also unfair, law is fair to all, if you commit crime you must be punish with the exact punishment, which is death, same with singapore law.

Everyone who have seen all the harm drugs cause to the society will not question capital punishment for this kind of crime.

The article raise a few questions in my mind.
      1. What type of house or car does she own in Malaysia and Singapore?
      2. Does she have a fat bank account?
      3. "the bag containing the drugs belonged to another person was difficult to believe and unreasonable" Why is it difficult to believe? Who is this other person? Someone with connections?
      4. Noor Atiqah was represented by a deputy public prosecutor....is he on her side or just fulfilling a cursory function?
      5. Amusing Noor Atiqah is a Muslim, does she have any recourse in the Syariah Court?

If the justice there can be believed, then the next big concern is who will look after her child? Also, who was she selling it to? Why not catch the whole lot in the merchandising?

The world is trying to save life in japan; here, people is taking life in the name of law... imagine if you are in japan now, and you see someone trap, will you ask if the person had done anything wrong such as drug trafficking before you save that life? even if the person confess doing drug trafficking before, will you save him or look for the next vitim to save?

Those who support the death sentence maybe having an illusion that they are doing justices by punishing people whom had done wrong in the name of law to keep the society safe.

To these people. One day you will die too, then you will realise all human are equal no matter what he/she has done..

We should punish people that cause hurt to the society, but certainly not with death sentence, unless you think you are above human, otherwise lets give life a second chance..

      May God Bless Life..

No one is above the law. We have to respect the country judisciary system as she was proven guilty for drug trafficking after the Court trial. She has the right to appeal against her death sentence to the Yang The Pertuan Agong for leniency. May Allah forgive her, Insyaallah...

Any country that imposes the death sentence is barbaric country. The Judge, the Lawyers, the Policemen, the Politicians and all those responsible to carry out the death sentence are equally guilty. They all should be hanged. God gave life and it is only God that takes away.

What do u achieve realli by taking her life? All u do is make a young girl an orphan... Make drug trafficking a crime that warrants the capital punishment therefore severely inflating the drug's market value and making it lucrative enough for desperate single mothers who are struggling with life's high economic demands especially from such a caring and generous state like Singapore to try their luck juz for one big pay day to pay off their mounting debts or ease their perpetual financial burden... In fact capital punishment shud be for CORRUPT AND RACIST AS WELL AS RELIGIOUS BIGOT POLITICIANS who wage emotional sentiments and constantly divide the people of a country for their own greed... The ones we seem to have constantly sprouting up all over the world today... The way they seize upon each incident and sensationalize it for their own selfish ambitions with scant regard for the safety of the common people is extremely deplorable... It juz gets too convenient some times... I think the entire society is to be blame when a young legal officer and single mother has to resort to drug trafficking... But hey nothing gets thru the meritocracy preaching and extremely self inflating proud Singaporeans... How many lives have been lost and talent wasted... There will always be drugs or natural hallucinogenics... It has existed since the beginning of time... Instead start thinking of how to make life better for other perhaps so that they do not have to walk down that dark path in life... Peace... ;p

      1. The news never say from where or which country she arrive with that bag of drugs or how she was caught with that bag.
      2. If it had been proven with unreasonable doubt that it belongs to her, then she should be dealt with whether she is a mother of 6 yrs old child or she have a old grandmother to look after.
      3. Regardless of whether u are the Master Minds, Delivery Boy or the Pusher, u are generally destroying the society.
      4. If she is a legal assistant, she should know the law better. If we all judge on compassionate ground, then today we may have more criminals walking out free. And all mothers may end up being a delivery girl or pushers for those masterminds instead of men.
      5. We can be compassionate and take pity on her child, but the law is still the law. Law is to instill peace and justice. What peace or justice if she is a deliverer of drugs that harm our society or your children. Think about it.

Wonder where is all those lawyer and human right group from malaysia who make a lot of noise when singapore judge sentences a malaysia man to death saying is inhuman to do that. Why now they did not kao pa kao bu on their own systems also ah.
    • S  •  1 year 2 months ago
If what she said was true, that the bag of drugs doesnt belongs to her, then the court would have just "killed" an innocent life. Why was it difficult to believe? I think majority working in enforcement jobs tend to choose not to believe first in whatever the victims/offenders says. They only trust the physical thing, which is known as the 'PROOF'. She works as a legal asst, she should know the seriousness of trafficking, MOREOVER, I believe all Singaporeans know how serious it is to do trafficking. This is like STAMPED in our brain. She has a stable job, a family and a 6 year old child, DO TRAFFICKING FOR WHAT? Malaysia Court, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GO THROUGH THIS CASE THOROUGHLY AGAIN. I hope the Malaysia's Court of Justice can really look into this case again because it is going to be a chain effect. A child without a mother, how can the child survive? There are so many possibilities that may happen to her child if she is not around. Parents will feel upset and heartache, which will be with them for the rest of their lives. They also lose a pillar to rely on.. Most of the cases for trafficking are for people who are drug addict, who is suffering from terminal/serious illness which cant be cured anymore (thats y they dare to do trafficking becos they gonna die anyway, and earning one last large sum for the family is something that they will do w/o hesitating), or they are freaking poor. I just simply cant see the reason why she wants to do trafficking and prolly what she say was really the truth (but majority enforcement officers tend to have selective hearing). Please dig for more proof!
