Delta tops the world's most admired airlines

Delta Air Lines has been voted the world's "most admired airline" by Fortune magazine, managing to push the much-acclaimed Singapore Airlines into second place.

The award, announced March 3, means that Delta came out top in a string of assessments including social responsibility and quality of product, as well as business-related criteria such as quality of management and global competitiveness.

Delta has moved steadily up the ranks over the past four years to reach top spot, which was awarded to Singapore Airlines last year -- the airline's boss Richard Anderson described the award as a "remarkable achievement" in a note to staff.

Other airlines in the top ten included major international carriers such as Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, Cathay Pacific Airways, Qantas, British Airways and ANA.

Despite the award, a quick look at the figures show some improvements to be made for Delta.

Although the company topped its peers for social responsibility, quality of management and global competitiveness (among others), it was lower placed in other areas, most notably quality of products/services where it scored a relatively low ranking in 7th.

That criteria was led by (you guessed it) Singapore Airlines, with Air France/KLM in second place, Cathay Pacific in third and Lufthansa fourth.

    The world's most admired airlines:

    1     Delta Air Lines
    2     Singapore Airlines
    3     Southwest Airlines
    4     Lufthansa Group
    5     Air France-KLM Group
    6     Cathay Pacific Airways

I have to speak up for the excellent service we received from SIA. My 4 year old girl flew form SIN to Tokyo on her birthday. When she boarded the plane, she was warmly received by the SIA steward and stewardess and they showered her with special birthday presents! It turns out that they got the information during check-in and prepare for the little "surprise" for her on board. She was so thrilled and she took loads of pictures with the crew! I will give THUMBS UP for SIA...
p.s. We were in economy class...not business class ok.

I guess they compared First class of Delta with Economy of SIA. And even then, I would prefer to fly SIA than being tortured by the respectless Delta crew.

I am an American working in Singapore and I fly frequently.. guess what - I love SIA!!! Delta (or any American carrier) sucks!! They are more into bigger bounuses for CIO/CEO and older Union crew which leaves no money for new air craft or customer service. They are still serving 'cup-a-noodle' for snack. SIA - You Rock!!!!!

Fortune or Forbes or whoever decided on the ranking is another american setup. In my opinion all of you out there - please think out of the box. Forget the ranking. I could setup my own ranking and call it WoDeDengJi and rank the arilines of the world based on my set of criteria. Don't bother with the external system. Just do well for your own country economy, live well and disregard extraneous influences.

Fully agree : I would not even call Delta "an airline" compared with SQ. Same with Air France : this is the worst of the worst and they are 3rd ! Unbelievable.

I personally do not think DELTA deserve to be consider a better airline compared to SIA.

I've been on a DELTA flight earlier this year and i find that the service isn't that fantastic.

Firstly, when taking SIA (even if its a short flight), if you request for snack, they will provide you with biscuit or nuts, etc. But when u do the same on a DELTA flight, all they can tell you is "sorry, we do not have". I was on a flight from San Francisco to Narita Airport, it was about a 12 hour flight, without snack when watching a movie.

Secondly, not all DELTA airplane are equip with personal screen to watch a movie, being on a long haul flight, it's very tiring to lift your head to watch. ALL SIA plane are equip with a personal screen and SIA headset are so much better.

Thirdly, the person seated infront of my aunt was having his seat back during meals. When we ask him to move, he gave us a stare. When the crew asked him, he did not even bother and the crew did not even request him a second time, she just walked away. Which is definately not a right attitute. SIA would make sure the seat is up before they proceed to their own task.

Lastly, since mine was a transit flight from San Francisco to Narita to SG. Travelling as a family, they had us scattered around the plane.

Anyway, all person have different perspective, so this is just my point of view, like it or not.

Delta? It's decent but it still doesn't compare to SIA. I was just on two return trips from the US on Delta in the past month, and there was nothing spectacular about those flights. By contrast I flew SIA last year and it was so much more comfortable and the crew more attentive to any requests I had.

u must b on their business class (or 1st class)...SIA means only service to Business class and above, and for economy class - only service for the AngMos....

Delta's service is okay if u travel on Business class. I will only fly on Delta if its for the Business class otherwise i prefer not. Seat wise for economy class is bad. . its a killer for a long flight. Same goes for the meals they serve. I have been flying on SQ since young and their service is good eventho you are on Economy class. I feel very welcome when im on SQ den Delta. End of the day, its all about the service.

good. travel on delta airlines then. stop going back to SQ and further upset yourself.
      • BCBG 1 year 2 months ago
well im not fortunate enuff to travel in Business class for all my trips.. i would fly with Delta if im on Business class ONLY but not if im on the econmy class. I would die..

Nineteen months ago, I flew business class from US to SG. I politely ask the stewardess to help me with my suitcase to put it in the overhead compartment ( she knows I’m struggling to put my suit case) and what response I got? A ROLLING EYES & SMIRK!!! So when it’s time for us to get off from plane in SG, the stewardess went to our aisle and again she saw me struggling with my suitcase to reach for it…this time I was really blown away by her actuation and kept my cool….she ignored me and turned her back heading to economy aisle!!! Is that how they suppose to treat their business class passengers... what's more left for economy class pax??? It was a baffling experience!
Also, I absolutely agree to all criticisms posted by these people since I experience the same thing. NItty, you are correct about the politeness of stewardess…but the question is to whom???, I have been in SQ flight US, Australia and Asia and observing it for the past years that stewardess are POLITE AND MORE SMILINGLY ACCOMODATING TO WHITE MEN rather than Asian women!!! Sad to say that my observation with the STEWARDESS’ BIASED TREATMENT towards Asians vice Caucasians was affirmed by another experience commentator NITTY…this goes without saying that our concerns must be brought to the SIA management and train their Stewardess to be respectfully fair to all passengers! Beauty does not come from the uniforms and hairdos alone but by every courteous act they provide to ALL!

I have been hearing a lot of positive things thru my peers about DELTA AIR when it comes to Social Responsibility…they go above and beyond and service is superb! Good deeds never go unnoticed!!!

DELTA another feather to your cap! Congratulations!

        AGREEABLE!

I have experienced more or less the same as you.
the on board crew horrifically need a customer service training, not to differentiate their passengers (in term of their race, or their skin color and gender)

sad to say, I would prefer the service and the way people on board treated me to the food or the seats (well for me the seats are more or less the same)

but at the end of the story attitude counts

Majority of the Singaporeans open their mouth wide if caucasians want to @#$% on their face.
      • B.H. 1 year 2 months ago
@Fong: This is a practice in Singapore. They discriminate their own citizens based on their race, skin color and gender.

I have flew in many flights. Have tried Delta too. It's nothing as good as SIA especially the business class. Most of the US flight's business class sucks. Certainly Delta can't be admired for conventional reasons. SIA still stands up, esp in terms of service.

i think sia is better than delta in any case
      DELTA sucks ALONG WITH aa

I have been flying SIA for 6 years straight and travels almost every week, I have seen the service gone down. Some FA's do have some passenger preference now. They ran out of food options 4 times in different flight occasions that I took and I was forced to eat something that I do not like because I was hungry. There was a time they said they ran out of meal option that I like so I ate something else only to find out in the end that they reserved for themselves and saw them eating behind. I think you should recheck on your services, if this is not a wake up call for you, maybe its for me to change airlines.

Strongly agree that the SQ standards have drop alot. SQ should stop going for contract staffs! Most of the check in staffs are mixture of foreigners from everywhere...I know that SQ hire crew by qualifications. What's the use of having qualifications but no standard and experience???

To be honest the Singapore Airlines grading should be lower. They pick on passenger to provide service. They look down on Asian even we our own Singaporean. Once travel ona SQ flight from Hong Kong back to Singapore my backpack was stain a big patch of grease. I reported the case to the ground staff. The SQ staff pass me a form and told me to fill up the form myself and just walk off a few minuters a pair of Ang Mo couple came to complain about some stain on the bag too. The counter staff apologise to them fill up the form and promise that SQ will take action very fast. After filling up the form I ask should I leave the bag at the office or bring it back till SQ inform me to my horror after the counter staff took the form look at my bag she told me you can go back with your bag and try washing it or else please wait till they call me as there are lot of more serious cases and it might take a long time. After this case I dont take SQ flight anymore.

I travel very regularly on SIA.. many times I feel the cabin crew is more focused on finishing their job on hand, rather than meeting the passenger's 'genuine' requests... also some of them have been really agressive in their response... like... ask for a glass of water after you enter the cabin (before doors are closed)... one cabin crew just said.. "not now sir wait till we take-off" ... no courtesy like 'please' etc.. ideally she could have been polite & explain the situation.. I could have understood... but they seem to think different... that's the biggest difference... I feel it may also be because of the stress they go thru...

To all sg people! Ever heard of the term, "THE UGLY SINGAPOREAN"!!
We are all but human... even the SIA crew are human. And to err is human.
Once I boarded a flight in the morning, and the stewardess greeted a customer at the door "Good morning sir",( I was behind this guy) and the reply to the stewaredss was "STRAITS TIMES".!!
I was utterly shocked by the reply from the guy (obviously singaporean!!).
At least a reply of " good morning!" "may i have a copy of the straits times please?"
So you see my dear people, Don't complaint too much. Look at ourselves in the mirror first.

For the past 25 years, I have flown with many airlines for one reason or another, for long or short trip, Somehow I alway felt that taking SIA is more comfortable and less tiring at the end of the trip.

May have hiccup once in a while, may be pricy, but overall if I have a choice, it is still...a great way to fly.
    • Albert CW  •  1 year 2 months ago
I have been flying Singapore airline for the past 15 yrs and averaging twice monthly. It's true that the services by crews have dropped. The only things that rises is the price comparing to other airline.
    • tomdelre  •  1 year 2 months ago
Delta, you must be kidding me, they are the worst ever, i would rather swim to the US than take a flight with them again.
    • jess  •  1 year 2 months ago
i just flew in this morning on SQ - their service is always excellent .. nevertheless, perhaps from price competitiveness , they may have lost out.. there are always a lot of other factors in consideration and if terms of monetary - i have to admit that they are on a stiff side with recent increases
    • ViolinBoy  •  1 year 2 months ago
NO NO NO NO....... the survey is done wrongly.... how could DELTA emerge better than SIA?... was in a Delta flight to Tokyo and guess what... IT SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • XLee  •  1 year 2 months ago
I agree that SIA service level is not as good as before! I remember when I was a kid, during my birthday month, my parents brought me to Perth for a holiday. The Pilot and a few of the crew came over with a birthday cake, a birthday card and sang a birthday. It was memorable!

Although their standards are not as good now, but if you really want to compare with other airlines, I think SIA is still one of the best! I just wish that they will continue to improve and not get complacent.
    • gary  •  1 year 2 months ago
People who think Singapore airlines are no good must have their own private jets with full attendant servants, for economy travelers ,they are the best and by a long long way especially longer haul. Im not Singaporean either !
