Everything you know about dieting is wrong: US scientists

Everything you know about dieting is wrong, say US scientists who have devised a new formula for calculating calories and weight loss that they hope will revolutionize the way people tackle obesity.

Obesity rates have doubled worldwide in the past 30 years, coinciding with a growing food surplus, and the ensuing epidemic has sparked a multibillion dollar weight loss industry that has largely failed to curb the problem.

Current standards in the United States, where two thirds of people are overweight or obese, advise people that cutting calories by a certain amount will result in a slow and steady weight loss over time.

But that advice fails to account for how the body changes as it slims down, burning less energy and acquiring a slower metabolism, researchers told the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Vancouver.

The result is a plateau effect that ends up discouraging dieters and sending them back into harmful patterns of overeating.

As an example, researcher Kevin Hall offered up his large vanilla latte, purchased at a popular coffee shop. When he asked, the barista told him it contained about 240 calories.

"The notion was if I drank one of these every day and then I replaced it with just black coffee no sugar, then over the course of a year I should lose about 25 pounds, and that should just keep going," Hall told reporters.

"People have used this sort of rule of thumb to predict how much people should lose for decades now, and it turns out to be completely wrong."

Hall, a scientist with the US National Institutes of Health, said his work aims to "come up with better rules and better predictions of what is going to happen when an individual changes their diet."

He and colleagues said their scientific model is aimed to help doctors and policymakers, while a "back-of-the-envelope calculation" for consumers means cutting small amounts of daily calories, but expecting to cut more over time.

"If I want to lose 10 pounds of weight eventually, I have to cut 100 calories per day out of my diet," Hall explained.

"You'll get halfway there in about a year, and then you will eventually plateau, (reaching the goal) after about three years," he added.

"For folks abroad that works out to about 100 kilojoules per day per kilogram. The contrast is the old rule of thumb predicts twice as much weight loss after a year, and it gets worse after that."

The new model gives dieters one calorie goal for short term weight loss and another for permanent weight loss. Exercise is also calculated in to help set realistic goals.

Tests on small numbers of adults who were fed strictly controlled diets showed the model was accurate, though real-life situations are harder to predict.

Study co-author Carson Chow, also with NIH, said the daily calorie cut needed for weight loss was actually smaller than researchers anticipated.

"It is essentially one cookie different a day, so a 150 calorie cookie leads to a seven kilogram (15 pound) difference in weight. That is huge in my opinion," Chow said.

Their model was first published in The Lancet in August 2011, and a link is available at http://bwsimulator.niddk.nih.gov.

"People can plug in some information about their initial age, their height, their weight, some estimate of their physical activity level," Hall said.

Add in a goal weight and the "model will simulate what changes of diet or exercise that person would have to do to achieve that goal weight, and then even more importantly what they need to do permanently maintain that weight loss."

Since The Lancet article appeared, the notion has not exactly taken the world by storm, in part because it's not primed for public use, but is mainly aimed at doctors and researchers with adult American patients for now.

Also, if a dieter enters an extreme weight goal, the number of calories the model returns may be much too low to be realistic or healthy, so it needs an expert's interpretation.

"It's not particularly user friendly... but it is still relatively informative," said Hall, who maintains hope that some day his message will be heard.

"There is a lot of inertia behind these old rules of thumb," he said, adding that he was heartened by an editorial in December in the journal of the American Dietetic Association that commented on the idea of a weight loss plateau and mentioned the new simulator.

"It's going to take some time to get the public and the professional community aware that there is a new way of doing things, and we actually have some tools that weren't available before."

exercise with weights is still the best to lose body fat, since weight trainning stimulate muscle growth, and once you have built more muscles, your metabolism will speed up and you will burn more calories even if you are at rest .diet is also important,we should consume enough calories to support what we have been doing every day.if your caloric intake is too low,it will slow down the metabolism, and you will burn less calories even you are exercising,it is due to losing muscle tissues.

precisely! Your body tries to stores more fats if u reduce intake, similar to what you do to your pockets! Earn more money, spend more cash, earn less, spend less. Eat more, workout more, gain muscles, metabolism helps u do the rest!

Well, scientific research in anything will never end you know why? Because they always look for something better. If you read the article it was mentioned about multibillion dollar diet programs etc. Now what about this article? they are introducing a new product, a book perhaps a guide line. What do you call this? It is a method also on how to loose weight etc. By the way I am a personal trainer: General rule is, I'm going directly hope people wont get mad. "If you are FAT it is obvious that you don't do much activities, you eat a lot of unwanted food. If you really are looking forward to be healthy and loose weight, well you have to go the hard way because there is no easy way. It is actually a mental challenge, you have to be motivated, you have to know what foods to consume and find something that will boost your motivation. Sugars they have no use in our body, they go to fats straight, once in a while is okay, if you eat a piece of cake make sure you have 40 mins spare time for treadmill to burn it, You know what is butter made off?.

Loosing weights is not easy, I don't blame people if they fail to loose weight. But if your committed, kung gusto mo talagang pumayat? kumain ka ng mga greens, avoid kanin, if you can't resist it atleast eat rice once a day lang and it has to be during the day, dahil rice has a lot of energy, and if you don't use that energy it will store to fat. Eat small meal lang para hindi kayo ma bloated, wag na wag pagutom, try to eat or nibble every 2 hours ng maliit na pagkain like peanut or carot or prutas. At last do some exercise, cardio and weights lifting are the best to loose weights.

      Good luck

Strength training to build muscles. That is the only way to increase metabolism and get past the plateau. Then there is the type of calories which cause fatness... simple carbs. Protein and fat calories are not the problem. The article is very behind time.

No, everything I know is still right... exercise, eat healthy food many times a day and eat only what your body needs is still the way to be thin. Also, it works, I tried and succeeded. There is no miracle against universe laws.

what to eat n not to eat? 1stly, I am fat. I admit that with my fat friends, we eat as if the world is gonna end. 1st approach before you even consider to shape up is, be honest wit urself. No point taking into consideration about all the carb, starch, trans or saturated fat in each dish you eat if you eat like that. Its been 6 mths Im adapting to my new lifestyle of eating healthily n exercising regularly but the tough part is the dieting, avoiding my McDonalds, late nite Ben&Jerry's Ice Cream n my cigarette cravings. But I've achieved alot enduring, from 48" waist to 36". The battle will never come to an end, just have to keep getting used to it like learning how to ride a bicycle uphill, but I know eventually, I'll look alot better down next few mths & I believe the once-in-awhile snacks or fried food might be okay, Until then, to all ppl that gonna attempt to shape up, I wish you all the best, don't take all comments 100%... Find afew good motivational idols n keep doing that cardio n weights exercise, WE CAN DO IT!!!

What I do know is the Ketogenic diet. Limit the carbs intake per day. Singapore food contains too much rice and other kinds of wheat that has too much carbo. Carbohydrates are always broken down into glucose and then entering the metabolic pathway. The way to lose weight (body fat) is to consume enough fat in your diet and a larger amount of protein and limit your carbohydrates intake. Bread is definately making you fatter as it increases your blood glucose and will encourage insulin spikes. In this way, excess sugars are stored as fat in your body. Therefore the best way to lose weight is to exercise (aerobics) and eat enough fat (omega 3 fish oil or vegetable fat) and a higher protein intake. Remember, before you start any diet plans, consult a dietician or a doctor first to access your heath. This diet is not recommended/ may not be suitable for people with kidney, liver or dibetic problems.
