Wealthy women around the world wait years to get their hands on one, and they’re regularly dubbed one of the world’s most sought after accessories. So when Francesca Eastwood and her photographer boyfriend burned an Hermès Birkin worth a whopping $100,000 for a photoshoot, to say that it didn’t go down too well would be an understatement. In fact, since posting the photographs of their Birkin bonfire online, the daughter of film legend Clint Eastwood is now receiving death threats.
Outraged viewers, who watched in horror as the pair massacred the luxury crocodile-skin version of the bag, setting it alight before hacking into the red leather with a chainsaw (yes – a chainsaw!), have posted a barrage of abuse aimed at the pair online. Eighteen-year-old Francesca, who says she burned the bag in ‘the name of art’, has been accused of being a ‘rich girl with nothing better to do than burn money’, whilst others say that the wasted money could have been used to benefit charities or people in ‘real need’, and called the shoot ‘crazy’.
It’s not the first time Francesca and her beau have butchered a luxury item as part of a shoot: in January, she also set fire to a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes worth $10,000. Francesca has admitted that she expected the stunt, during which she is also seen biting the handles of the bag, to cause some strong reactions – she was right – but says she didn’t expect the comments to be so volatile or threatening.
Still, according to website TMZ, she remains more unfazed than her readers – telling friends that ‘people just don’t understand art.’ To that, one reader retorted, ‘This is not art at all its just plain stupidity!’ (Awkward.)
The cremation was premeditated by comments made by Francesca’s step-mother - Clint Eastwood’s wife – Dina, on reality TV show Mrs Eastwood and Company. She expressed her disgust at the fact that she even had a bag worth so much money, and the programme examined how Francesca struggled as a child, and how she didn’t have an understanding of the true value of money. You could say that…
So d’ya geddit? Or are you still mourning the Birkin? Tell us what you think!
