Hannah Marshall Designs Florence Welch’s Stage Outfit For Coachella 2012!

When Grazia Daily bumped into Hannah Marshall this London Fashion Week, the Brit designer was looking particularly chirpy. ‘I’m taking a couple of seasons off from having a catwalk show and doing lots of other exciting projects,’ she mysteriously revealed. Ooh, how intriguing! Cut to this morning and we find an email from Hannah in Grazia Daily’s inbox. It details exactly one of these exciting projects: the creation of a bespoke outfit for Florence Welch’s headline performance at Coachella.

Yup, the inky blue velvet bodysuit and chiffon cape covered in Swarovski elements that the songstress wore to frolick about on stage in the Californian desert last night was the handy work of Ms Marshall – and here's the designer's original sketch. LOVE those sharp shoulders!

Hannah collaborated with super-stylist Aldene Johnson to create the piece for Flo’s Coachella appearance AND for her tour suitcase as Ms Welch takes her Machine across the USA, Australia and Europe. Now that IS exciting! Especially considering the last designer to do so was none other than Frida Giannini, Creative Director of Gucci.

‘Designing for a music artist is not just about the clothes – everything I do is narrative led,’ Hannah reveals. ‘I take the song, the lyrics, the mood, the artist’s DNA, the blue print of history and adjoin together with the future of things to come.’

Indeed, Hannah’s dramatic goth aesthetic, signature dark palette and empowering silhouettes are ideal for the flame-haired, fair-skinned frontwoman who likes to swoosh about the stage in vampy designs. And the pair’s previous collaborations have already confirmed this is a match made in fashion heaven.

To wit, Florence + The Machine’s ‘Drumming’ music video showcased the designer’s sculpted leather body suit with wing-like sleeves [above] as well as a black trapeze dress constructed from over 18 meters of silk. ‘I love creating special pieces for artists such as Florence,’ Hannah said at the time. ‘Not only do they come to life and give the piece a heartbeat, but my work is digitally immortalised.’ Then came the velvet catsuit that featured in the ‘Cosmic Love’ video, followed by a series of suitably swooshy stage outfits.
