Historic 144-year-old store burnt by rioters

LONDON (AP) — For more than 140 years, the House of Reeves was a landmark in Croydon, a family-run business that supplied generations of families as the area changed from a small town to a London suburb.

On Tuesday, it was a smoldering ruin, reduced to a shell in minutes by rioters who surged through the neighborhood, looting and burning.

"I'm the fifth generation to run this place," said owner Graham Reeves, looking puffy-eyed and shocked. "I have two daughters. They would have been the sixth."

Edvin Reeves first opened the store in Croydon — which was then a separate town nine miles (15 kilometers) south of London and is now one of the capital's larger suburbs — in 1867. The business prospered, and he was able to hand the store down to his descendants, who kept it going through two World Wars and the Great Depression. The store, which employs around 15 people, is now run by Graham and his older brother Trevor.

"I'm devastated. All my life was there," Graham Reeves said. "I carried my wife across the threshold of the store 30 years ago."

The 52-year-old was bewildered by the attack on the store.

"No one's stolen anything. They just burnt it down," he said. "It's pointless."

Reeves said his father, who ran the business before handing it down to his sons, is distraught.

"He's 80," Reeves said, adding when he told his father the news "I thought he was going to die."

Croydon is a multicultural suburb, with good transport links and an old fashioned tram system that links elegant Victorian civic buildings with concrete and glass shopping centers. It has some areas of social deprivation but also a strong sense of civic pride.

The House of Reeves was a landmark — the area around it is known as Reeves Corner — and a much-loved independent store in an area dominated by chains.

"The police let us down," said Andrew Hinton, a 26-year-old construction worker looking at the burned building. "They guarded the Whitgift (a large shopping mall) round the corner but let the independents like this burn."

Reeves said the store was insured, but the task of rebuilding is daunting.

First things first: His father is insisting that stock stored across the street be delivered to customers, just like they promised.

"He wants to deliver the furniture to people," he said. "After that I don't know."

Gotta love the irony of this story. These people that riot will complain about how the big corporations are only concerned about profits and not people. So what do the do? They burn down a small family owned store in their own neighborhood.

The way to deal with mobs of looting and rioting thugs is to put in place a curfew and if you are seen on the street after that point and are caught in the act of looting you will be shot any survivors will be shot again.

I promise that all the punks thinking of decorating their homes with other peoples belongings and a stolen playstaion 3 will do some serious soul searching before they go out and start stealing from law abiding citizens and burning down peoples 150 year old stores.

The rioters should be warned once, and then shot with real bullets if they do not back down.

Dude! Let's leave the "dog" perjoratives out of this. Dogs behave much better than rioting humans!

I don't know about Britain, but in the US it's always when the police shoot a black that the riots and burning and looting start. Not when they shoot a white, an Asian, or an Arab-American, it is always and forever the angry blacks who do this, and only the angry blacks. If the police shoot a white guy, whether it is done rightly or wrongly, on purpose or by mistake, justly or unjustly, what happens? Nothing, is what. I've been sick of this for a long time. In college, I joined in a civil rights march in my city. As "black and white together" marched through the black neighborhoods, the whites were taunted and jeered by blacks who were not in the demonstration. When we got to city hall, the "community leader" of the time stood before city hall, facing the street, with solid rows of blacks before him, looking the same way. He said, and I quote, "Our enemy has blond hair and blue eyes."

Well, I am possessed of those features -- well my eyes are still blue -- myself. I then joined the white observers on the other side of the street, who were not part of the march. Frankly, I felt betrayed. Was I to conclude that MY enemy had brown skin, thick lips, nappy black hair? I stuck with the notion of civil rights, in principle, but I could never forget this insult and betrayal. This vicious and hostile attitude has been endemic to blacks before and since that time.

White and black people had DIED for this clown's rights. I know of no other group who are as nasty and self-righteous.

When are the citizens going to have to take things into their own hands and defend their property? Cross this line and you will be shot. To these young thugs maybe seeing their buddies face blown off kinda take the shine off that new tv.

The police have given up and surrendered the streets to the "deprived" because that's what's considered politically correct.

And what did this gang of unruly, uncaring people gain by doing that? They just cause hurt to other people, innocent people. The trouble with youth if that not only does it lack experience, but usually it also lacks formal education and common sense.

Had it happened in China, it would be called a human rights issue. Well, well... how shall we call this one? Yeah you're right. It's called "riot".
