Huayi Brothers pleads court to throw case

14 Apr - Huayi Brothers, the production company that brought us 2012's biggest box office winner, "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons", have pleaded the court to throw the case that was filed by its director, Stephen Chow.

As reported on Fireinews, previously, Stephen's holding company, Wei Ying Investment Litd., sued the company for contract breach, saying that Stephen and Huayi Brothers' Wang Zhongjun had an oral agreement that the latter will pay a box office bonus if the box office takings exceeded RMB500 million (USD80.4 million).

However, no bonus had been given despite the fact that the movie made a total of RMB1.25billion (USD201 million) at the box office.

Huayi's legal representative stated that though the two sides have signed an agreement stating their cooperation, Huayi has never signed the second agreement between Stephen and Wang.

Huayi also claimed that after dividing the profits with the cinemas and distributors, the company's total profit is actually less than RMB500 million and hence, no bonus payment should be given.
