[Infographic] How Android is taking over mobile

MBA Online summarises the aggressive rise of Android in the mobile operating system space.

From a small startup acquired by Google in 2005, championed by Larry Page himself , Android became the current dominant mobile operating system in the market with over 250 million Android-based devices activated per year. Compared to 104.7 million iOS devices in 2011. The number of Android devices activated daily is more than twice its biggest rival.

Google’s Android, being one the most popular mobile operating system for other mobile manufacturers, saw a rise in its adoption together with Samsung’s recent success with its latest line of mobile devices. In the third quarter of 2012, Samsung became outsold Apple, with the Galaxy S3 selling more units than the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 combined.

Moving from a 29 percent share of the tablet market in the second quarter of 2012, Android captured an impressive 41.3 percent of the that market at the end of the third quarter. This brought Apple’s comfortable share of over 65 percent down to just half of the total market.

In 2012, Google Play made US$1.68 billion dollars in app revenue, compared to Apple’s App Store, which still lead at US$2.53 billion.
