International box office: 'Battle: Los Angeles' charged to the top spot

'Battle: Los Angeles' has topped the international box office three weeks in a row

The alien invasion film, Battle: Los Angeles took in $29 million across 55 markets, reaching No. 1 internationally as well as in Australia, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Hungary, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It opened with $11.8 million in almost 4,000 cinemas in China, the widest release for a foreign film in that country.

Johnny Depp's Rango wrangled second place with $20 million in 54 territories, slipping from the top spot.

The animated comedy performed well for its debut in Russia and placed No. 1 in Israel, adding up to a total international gross of $73 million.

At No. 3, The Rite, a supernatural drama starring Anthony Hopkins collected $7.2 million from 39 markets. It was pulled from Japan's release schedule last weekend.

Black Swan reaches fourth place with $5.8 million in 43 countries. The thriller, starring Oscar winner Natalie Portman, tied internationally with Sluzhebnyy roman - Nashe vremya (Office Romance), which opened in Russia at No. 1. The comedy sequel by director Sarik Andreasyan, updates the 1977 original.

The fifth position was shared by The Adjustment Bureau and Torrente 4, taking $5.6 million each this weekend. The romantic thriller starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt is screening in 38 markets, including Taiwan where it reached No. 1. It opens in six more markets this week, including France. The comedy sequel from actor-director Santiago Segura remained at No. 1 in Spain.

Other films opening at No. 1 in individual markets include Ma part du gateau (My Slice of the Cake) earning $3 million for its debut weekend in France and in South Africa, Just Go With It, the romantic comedy with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston hit the top.

Also of note are films currently screening internationally that have substantially surpassed North American box office figures: The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader has made $300 million, with only $104.1 million in the US and The Tourist, costarring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, has generated $67.6 in the US but more than $201.9 million around the world.
