Kids in Philippine village swim to school no more

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Dozens of dirt-poor children in a Philippine mangrove village no longer have to swim to school while straining to hold their books above the water.

A blogger who learned how children from Layag-layag village struggled to reach school raised money through Facebook to provide boats to the community in the southern Philippines.

A bright-yellow, donated motorboat carried Layag-layag children to their elementary school off bustling Zamboanga city Monday when the country's nearly 26 million students returned to school after a two-month break.

The new school year refocuses this poor Southeast Asian nation's attention to the ills of its educational system — congested classrooms, dilapidated buildings and a huge number of dropouts due to poverty.

But school opened with a piece of good news for the village whose youngsters for years had to swim and wade through about a mile of mostly chest-deep water and cross sandbars to reach school.

Teacher Racquel Bangayan said the children arrived in her class with their clothes dripping wet in the past when they could not hitch a ride on fishing boats. Many often came late but a few excelled in school.

More than 220 families fish and seaweed-farm in Layag-layag, where they resettled starting in the 1980s due to fighting between government troops and Muslim separatist rebels in their towns on nearby Jolo island.

Government employee and blogger Jay Jaboneta said he learned of the childrens' plight last October and helped start fund-raising through his Facebook account. His tale was spotlighted in the Best of Facebook Stories.

"Some of these children came from families which were too poor to buy even small boats so they have to swim their way to school," Jaboneta told The Associated Press. "It's an inspiring story. They saw the school as the only way out of poverty."

Jaboneta raised enough money for one motorboat, named "New Hope," which was turned over to community leaders in March. Villagers can use the boat for fishing and seaweed farming but have to set aside money from their profits for gasoline and promise to ferry the children to and from school, charity worker Anton Lim said.

Two more boats were being built, and the charity group overseeing the donations also provided school bags, slippers and blankets to the children.

"The children were jumping with joy holding their new bags and slippers," Lim said. "They did not appear as excited with the new boat. They've been so used being in the water."

Very good idea indeed. Congratulations and thanks to the one who initiated the project. This reflects much on us.. so few of us will take the initiative to start things moving. We would rather wait for somebody. We need to be more human and that includes me.

The children there put many of us to shame. Remember those days when we fake a cough just to skip school? Or complained that we have to walk 5 mins to school? Haiz.

I feel so sad that there are so many kids have to go though so much just for school and glad that there are still many willing to help.

      Big thanks and god blessed.

philippine south is quite poor because of the wars ignited by muslim rebels. stop the war!!! south like jolo is training ground for the terrorists so i pity these children who are affected everyday by these good for nothing rebels.

Wadha, U born after the 80s or 90s; or in rich family? If u are, then good for you to realize that you did have a better childhood compared to many other kids in the world, and those born in the 60s and 70s in Spore.

Instead of feeling sad or happy, may be u can consider to turn emotions into actions and do something for kids around the world (if u have not done so thus far. If u had, keep it up n god bless u :)

Even though I'm not from Philippines I feel sad. Philippines government should do something for children. Also Terrorist, they must be eliminated. They're Muslims and they are nothing to do with Philippines.

When I look at the this blogger, and I look at some bloggers in SG. I cannot help but see the stark, stark contrast.
      • AL 11 months ago
N how do you know the 'some bloggers' in SG did not do their part for charity or to help others also?
Everyone has the freedom to choose how they want to contribute or make the world a better place in their own ways. Appealing for donations thro is just one of many uses of social media.
Pls do not put down others for freely expressing themselves on social media, otherwise soon will become 'constrained' media.....

Yeah, at least one local blogger I know likes to swear and engage in name calling activities, and she probably thinks it's a cool thing to do. Totally shameless. And she also has this huge bunch of followers!? I dun get it. People enjoy the photoshopped pictures or what? Get a life man!

@AL You are misconstruing my words. I am merely comparing the act of the blogger in said article to SOME bloggers in SG that I had in mind/opinion. Surely you do not know which few I am thinking about? How do you know that said bloggers I am thinking about have done charitable stuff?

And are you not putting me down for expressing myself on social media right now when I am merely expressing an observation I made?

by looking at the tv newsbroadcast this evening (june 06,2011), nobody in his right mind would object to the passage to the RH Bill. the usual problems, rear ugly again, at times like this (opening of classes). there are just TOO MANY KIDS in a classroom. as a student, how does any kid feel when they are crowding in a small classroom, 60 or more; I even seen a class of 100 students. These old men calledCBCP are just too mindful of the commands orders, coming from Vatican. Of all countries in the world, we are the ONLY NATION, with NO LAW regulating population. that's why, when opening of classes comes, the usual problems, army of schoolchildren, crowding a small classroom, lack teachers (of course there is not enough money to -pay for teachers' salary). lack of classroom, etc.

Andiyan yung Caritas. May Children of Light Catholic Minsitry pa, sa mga parishes andami ding scholars. I research niyo muna at nakakahiya po.

        Sa sinabi mong to:
"Of all countries in the world, we are the ONLY NATION, with NO LAW regulating population" - isa lang masasabi ko, na ang moralidad at katotohanan eh hindi uso uso lang. This world is becoming sick.
      • stupid_me 11 months ago

And in Singapore our children are so fortunate. Let's not take it for granted and learned to be appreciative of what we already have and DO NOT ask for the future to provide for you, instead work hard it.

CONGRATULATIONS, Jay. Our nation needs people like you more than it does politicos who'd rather spend wads of cash in casinos than spare a few thousand to buy a boat for those kids.

I rather donate $$ to get another baot for these fantastic children than give $$$ for that old clown who own houses and cars who (claims he got no$$) bit wants to be our President!
Someone please ask him to get a life... wif his remaining year!

Thanks and congrats! to those who shares their contribution with that project. Good job as well to the guy who initiate that. 'Hope and pray that this may serve as a good example to all citizens of our society. Be responsible not only for yourself but also to the others who really needs a helping hands. Good luck and God bless us all....

I have watched on TV an episode detailing the day to day journey of young children from their homes wherein they had to cross a mountain to get to school! And take note, some of them do it barefoot (they are impoverished). The other detail in their hard life as students is the fact that they don't have electricity which means no lights by which to study at night. I really felt terrible for them. I think I saw this on GMA 7 about two years ago maybe on the program 'reporter's notebook' or whatever, and I'm not sure anymore about the locality. I'm guessing it's Aurora or Quezon province. If anyone is aware of it's location or has seen the same program and story, I hope you can let us readers know. Maybe even blog about it like our hero in this article. Many thanks in advance.
