Kirilenko defeats Peng at Wimbledon

Peng Shuai failed to get past the fourth round of a Grand Slam once again as China's last remaining hope at Wimbledon was knocked out in three sets by Maria Kirilenko on Monday.

Peng, the 30th seed, hung on in the match in a second-set tie-break but Russian 17th seed Kirilenko broke twice in the final set for a 6-1, 6-7 (8/6), 6-3 win in two hours and 20 minutes on the Court 12 show court.

Kirilenko next faces Polish third seed Agnieszka Radwanska in what will be the Russian's second-ever Grand Slam quarter-final, having made the last eight at the 2010 Australian Open.

Peng, 26, the Chinese number three, has now reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam four times, without ever going further.

Kirilenko broke for a 3-2 lead in the final set and broke again to win the match when Peng sent a shot wide.

The two players had the best first service percentages going into the fourth round, Peng getting 77 percent in and Kirilenko 76 percent.

But Kirilenko could only hit 66 percent this time out, while Peng got 68 percent on target.

Both players will be back at the All England Club for the Olympic tennis tournament, which gets under way later this month.

It was the first time they had played each other in six years, Peng having won their last outing in Beijing.

Radwanska was looking forward to taking on the Russian number three.

"We played a couple times against each other, but never on grass. So I think it's going to be another challenge," the Pole said.

"Of course, she's very consistent player. I really have to play good tennis because this is the quarter-finals. Everybody is playing very good.

"Her tennis is very tough, especially she's moving very well. She's a very good fighter, as well. It's never easy."

Kirilenko celebrated by showing off her personal bag carrier -- ice hockey superstar Alexander Ovechkin.

Kirilenko and compatriot Ovechkin, who plays with the Washington Capitals in the NHL, have been dating since late last year and he was on hand to watch the match.

When she walked off court, Kirilenko threw her towel to her muscular boyfriend and passed him her bag, Ovechkin gladly escorting her back to the locker room.
