Last of Us wins Game of the Year at Game Developers Choice Awards 2014

Papers, Please bagged Innovation Award and Best Downloadable Game, and media critic Anita Sarkeesian was honoured with the Ambassador Award

As with every Game Developers Conference exhibition in San Francisco, the organisers usually celebrate the creative success of games with the annual Game Developer Awards ceremony. This year’s peer-based show had a lot of deserving titles winning prestigious awards (via Gamasutra).

Developer Naughty Dog won the Game of The Year award for its PS3 narrative-focused action game offering The Last of Us, which was the highest-acclaimed honor for the night. The developer also took home awards for Best Design and Best Narrative.

Developer Lucas Pope won the Innovation Award and Best Downloadable Game category for his indie dystopia puzzle game Papers, Please. Developer The Fullbright Company took home the Best Debut award for its first-person story-driven game Gone Home. The category had a number of heavy hitters like turn-based strategy game Card Hunter, story-driven game The Stanley Parable, sandbox space flight game Kerbal Space Program and sandbox action title State of Decay.

Not only was she the first woman to win the Ambassador Award, but her victory won her a standing ovation from the audience.

Other highlights include 3DS title The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds winning Best Handheld/Mobile Game, 2K Games and Irrational Games’ shooter BioShock Infinite winning Best Visual Art and Best Audio, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V winning Best Technology, and Kerbal Space Program winning the Audience Award.
