Mad rush back to Kuala Lumpur

Petaling Jaya (The Star/ANN) - Plus Expressway is bracing for heavy traffic in both directions of the North-South expressway this weekend with Malaysians expected to return to the capital after a week away from work.

"We are expecting heavy traffic on Saturday and Sunday with an estimated 1.6 million vehicles to hit the road each day," said its corporate communications general manager Khalilah Mohd Talha yesterday.

She urged those planning to return to the capital this weekend to instead travel on Friday to stagger the traffic.

She said Plus was offering the 10% rebate on toll rates for "Touch N Go" and "PLUSMiles" card users on Friday to encourage people to return before the weekend rush.

"Hopefully, motorists will take advantage of the rebate and also heed the Plus Travel Time Advisory to reduce the congestion on the roads this weekend," she said.

A check with Plus' traffic monitoring division revealed that Malaysians were not travelling yet with traffic clear in all areas of the highway yesterday, except for the Tapah-Bidor and Sungkai-Slim River stretches toward the capital, due to heavy rain.

"Otherwise, traffic is smooth on both directions towards the capital," said a spokesman, adding that Malaysians were also making the most of the school holidays, which ends on Sunday.

He added that it was likely that most of them would hit the road between Friday and Sunday.

Bernama quoted Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police Chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor as saying that traffic flow in the city was still smooth, except for several locations due to road closures due to rehearsals for the Federal Territory Day celebration.

He said several roads leading towards Dataran Merdeka, including Jalan Raja and Jalan Jalan Hishamuddin, had been closed.
