Maids made to queue for H&M clothes

Is it okay for employers to ask their maids to queue overnight for shopping?

That was what happened at the launch of the latest Versace for H&M collection, released on Thursday, when a 25-year-old female undergraduate told her maid to queue overnight on her behalf, reported Lianhe Wanbao.

It is understood that the undergrad could not make it due to her exam preparations.

The Filipino maid, who decline to be named, told the paper that she had joined the queue at 2pm a day before the collection was released at H&M’s Orchard Road store. She was also armed with S$2,000 in cash to make the purchases based on a shopping list given to her stating the sizes for every item.

The maid added that she did not mind queuing for her employer, who owns quite a number of H&M collaborative pieces.

The same paper reported that the first three people in the queue were maids. A few of the employers arrived  to take their place on the morning of the launch, which saw more than 280 in the queue before doors opened at 8am.
