Make decisions on eldercare ‘through consultation’: SDP

The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) on Monday voiced its support of the government’s initiatives for eldercare, but at the same time called for increased “genuine consultation” with citizens that may be affected by them.

In a statement sent to the media on Monday morning, party secretary-general Chee Soon Juan said that as working Singaporeans get busier, the provision of care centres and facilities for the older generation are all the more essential.

“More and more elderly people will be in need of care and that care will need to come from the communities where they reside,” said Chee in the statement, adding that close proximity of eldercare centres to families of elderly people is a crucial factor as well, as they help to give those cared for a sense of ease and comfort.

He qualified, however, that the concerns of residents living near and in the immediate vicinity of the suggested eldercare centres should also be heard, particularly on matters such as the exact location for the centres to be built.

“The locations should be decided through genuine consultation wth citizens rather than the usual top-down approach of the government,” said Chee. “We urge the authorities to take into consideration the views of the residents and find a position that is agreeable to all parties.”

In the statement, Chee and the SDP also called for healthcare reforms to address “changing needs” in Singapore’s populace.

“When responsive, affordable healthcare services are associated with void deck eldercare centres… residents will welcome these facilities and there will be a demand for them,” he said.

“The elderly generation have done their part to bring about the Singapore that we have today, and we have the obligation to provide the best for them during their twilight years,” he added.

The party’s response comes after recent objections by residents in Woodlands and Toh Yi Drive to government’s announced plans to build eldercare centres at the void decks of the former and studio apartments for the elderly in the latter estate.

These are the 1st generation that have contributed direct or indirectly to Singapore.
And what do they get in return?

Priority use of land should be given to the aged people. Without them there is no Singapore. Young generation should learn how to respect the elderly people cos they have contributed to the success of the country.

yes without PAP there will be no elder care centre as opposition will only do consultation until the end of time.

Isn't building them all near the hospitals or polyclinics a better choice? Easily assessable if any critical attention needed. Also faster response time for them to be send to hospitals.
If not, make use of all the CCs around Singapore, convert all and half them into care centres too, especially those older estates. Easier for family visits. Hmm.. I dunno, just suggesting

Also can lah.....pretty woman always got good suggestions.

@WindsOfChange,,Yes sharing the same opinion with you here, building them near polyclinic will be good. Better still if build beside or near CC since the CCs conduct many activities like Karaoke singing, Folk dancing, chess games, Tai Chi and many others which the elderly can participate in if they are still mobile.

Eldercare is here to stay. Like it or not, Singaporeans must learn to accept the old and sick. living/ or being cared for , right in their estates. Embracing the young and healthy comes naturally, but in Reality Life has it's downhill slope too. Society as a whole must LEARN to accept aging and decaying and death as part of Life. As a Christian I find it easier to accept the unlovely and the unwanted. The right thing to do is seldom the easiest.

I support the Opposition but SDP really boh-liao! Nothing new! What should be done for the elderly is to educate us to be independent from our children instead of making us sue our children. In addition, the Govt should set aside land for elderly care. Such land should be at least of 50 years leases (possible sites include Pulau Ubin or any surrounding island) for development of retirement villages (not old folks home). Such retirement villages may be modelled on the US/OZ ones where studio apts are the norm and health (basic ones like ambulatory service, health checks, nurse for emergencies and social (e.g. ice-cream nite/karaoke/seafood dinner/shopping or eco tours etc) needs are catered for.

"OH government should have consultative process."
its so cowardly to ride on popular controversy and to declare statements designed make yourself look good without offering any substantive solutions.

SDP: what if in the open consultation, no one wants it in their backyard? And who is suppose to defend and protect the poor helpless seniors? in the same vein, where would we put prisons, military bases and mental hospitals, all of which will be unpopular, on this small island. some decisions need to be EXECUTIVE DECISIONS!

SDP: stop posing as a political party, and start being one by coming up with constructive solutions for real Singaporean problems.

As an opposition political party and want to gain political mileage, they should be doing more, not just NATO, which the citizens and their MPs are already doing during their meet the people sessions.
They should be running kindergartens, like the PAP ones, elder care centres, etc to compete with them.
I agree with Jonn :"Like it or not, Singaporeans must learn to accept the old and sick. living/ or being cared for , right in their estates, where they can be closer to their homes". There are many cases of siblings who do not want to share their responsibilties to take care of their elderly parents. So much so these seniors have resort to selling tissue papers or collecting carton boxes or aluminium cans to feed themselves, while they queue up at the Natas Fairs for their own family hoilidays.

Why people here so sell fish? The Land belong to the every citizen, why can't build a elderly centre to benefit the residents? If it is your own land, then you can decide.

we are having the same garment for over 40yrs and yet they never planned it earlier...when they told and even indirectly influencing us to stop at two kids!
they never anticipated that there will be more elderly in singapore?
    • rodins  •  3 months ago
Do not worry-soon we will expect more elder care centers in more communities so every elder will have a chance to stay near homes.

What an "academic" piece of advice (read crap) from the SDP! Please wake up Mr argue-for-argument-sake (CSJ).... if you have nothing else other than textbook solution, you do much better keeping quiet! In actual fact, you said so much but you really said nothing at all... much like saying "look guys, the planet is round - you go left far enough, you will come back to the same place"!

People are a selfish lot ! "As long as that site is not near my home I am OK !" Many years ago when govt wanted to built a hospital on eastern part of the island, some residence living near the site were up in arms. Giving reason like noise of ambulance siren, possible spread of disease, crowded parking, valuation of the house drop, bad feng shui, etc. Know what happens, ambulance turn off siren when approaching the area of the hospital. And the valuation of those flats near the area did not go down but went up. The close proximity to a hospital is a plus for many. And before the SARS, one can find residence strolling into the hospital air-con atrium to relax. The opposition has the same mentality to having retirement village far away - what a joke ! The retirement village can be anywhere - why segregate the elderly ? Remember ! there are elderly people who support the opposition also !

Dont think consult is needed, they didnt need to consult when changing the CPF why consult now.
Next time just vacant the 2nd lvl then convert to care center, no need to specially build the toilet and stuff, just knock down some wall and have special lift for them.
I rather let them use the void deck, Then having a soccer team resting below then leaving their rubbish there. (house next to soccer field and basket ball court.) some basket ball players even pee openly next to the court. LOL

Affordable - please define this. My mother is 90 years old and live alone. $2000+++++ for put in at care centre. People who cares for thier parents cross to JB elderly care centre. Not because they do not want to know what happens to their parents,,,,,,,,,,SIMPLY,,,,,,,how many Singaporeans can afford $2000+++

Why blame SDP? They are not in power to do the actual planning/work! Unless we vote them in in 2016, then things may change.
Did HDB spell clearly in the sale/lease document at time of sale to us, that the void deck could be converted to anything (coffee shop, pap branch, and in this case - eldercare center) in the future at their wish. If no, then HDB shall consult the leaseees for agreement (just same as the improvement program that requires at least 75 percent of the leaseees' approval). We respect PAP to treat we, their own citizen 1st world class!

Victim of PAP's asset enhancement policy. HDB is not a public housing anymore, but a transactable asset.

MBT & SLA muxt be investigated & brought to justice. MBT had misled the people
by giving false hopes that their HDB homes will be valuable assets, by under supply
of HDB homes during his watch.
His policy was to" replaced" the existing local occupants with imported artificial
population, which was under WKS watch.
RELEASED OLD FOLKS, PART OF YESTERYEARS NATION BUILDERS TOO, THEIR
VERY OWN HARD EARNED FRUITS OF LABOR, CPF SAVINGS IN FULL AT 55 !!!!!!!!

...the government shot itself in the foot, with its own past actions heightening its present difficulty. Since the 1990s, it has kept up the mantra that rising property values are the proof of the worth and success of the People’s Action Party.
Vote for us, the PAP says at each general election, and we will upgrade and beautify your estate, and manage the economy so wonderfully, that the values of your homes will go up and up.

Secondly, the liberalisation of Central Provident Fund (CPF) rules, allowing huge chunks of personal pension fund savings to be shunted into property, has only made protecting the value of flats so much more acute.

Thirdly, this government, by its market-fundamentalist mentality, has created a society where conspicuous consumption and the flaunting of wealth and social exclusion have become indicators of social status. Living in a well-provided, socially rounded, “authentic” neighbourhood is considered low-class; living in a pretentious, environmentally irresponsible (you have to drive to get to your kids to pre-school or to your nearest convenience store!) , and demographically sanitised bubble is the aspirational good.

Take these histories into consideration and you’ll see that if the government is facing an uphill task today over these plans for the elderly, they are to an extent just reaping what they have sown.

...if more people spoke up accepting in principle the idea that eldercare and elder-friendly facilities are needed (and within our neighbourhoods), we might be able to have a more productive debate. But the issue is harder than it need be because of our politics. If the government is feeling lonely and besieged because naysayers are so adamant and because few citizens would speak out to criticise their fellow citizens for materialism and selfishness, and in defence of the government’s plans (at least in principle), it’s really the PAP’s chickens coming home to roost.
