Kuala Lumpur (The Star/ANN) - Malaysian actress Maya Karin is taking on a new role but she hopes the spotlight will shine on the underprivileged instead.
She has agreed to be the goodwill ambassador for the Yayasan Orang Kurang Upaya Kelantan.
Known for her advocacy on behalf of the environment, Maya said she was introduced to the foundation by her friends.
"I was moved by the residents' condition when I visited the centre in Kota Baru last month.
"I could see that it's not only people with disabilities who face challenges but also the caregivers who have to see to their needs.
"For many families, rehabilitation therapy is a luxury as some can't even afford the transport costs to get to places offering such services," Maya said.
She expressed hope that her role as a goodwill ambassador for the foundation would raise awareness and encourage the public to donate generously.
Foundation executive director Datin Suliana Shamsuddin Alias commended Maya for her concern for the less fortunate.
"Celebrities are in a position to bring attention to an issue.
"We hope that Maya's presence would help improve the quality of the lives of the disabled," Suliana said.
