A marketing campaign led by a major smart phone manufacturer has led to the world's first tweet to be sent from the top of Mount Everest.
The tweet was sent by British mountain climber Kenton Cool on his ninth ascent of the world's highest peak. The tweet sent on May 6 read "Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset!" @samsunguk .
The tweet was sent using a Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone and was made possible by the instillation of a 3G station at the base of Mount Everest in 2010.
Samsung uploaded a video of the attempt on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8d7Rb7XKEk .
Brands are turning to increasingly outrageous stunts or record attempts conducted through social media, not all of which go according to plan. On February 15 cookie brand Oreo attempted to set the (newly created) world record for most Facebook 'likes' in a 24-hour period, however the attempt was hijacked by rapper Lil Wayne who, after appealing to his fans, easily overtook the cookie brand in terms of 'likes'.
