Marriott introduces check-in service using Apple Pay

New service: Marriott expects to start rolling out Apple Pay this summer beginning at some of its hotels in the United States.

Marriott International, Inc. has announced a new service that is set to offer a complete mobile-powered travel experience for its guests.

According to its press release on March 9, it will become the first global hospitality company to offer Apple Pay, enabling guests to check-in using the app by simply bringing their iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or soon, Apple Watch, near the contactless reader at the front desk.

When their device responds with a subtle vibration and beep, the payment information has been securely captured; no more need to provide a credit card.

"Approximately 75 percent of our guests travel with one or more mobile devices, and it is even higher among 25-35 year olds – a group that will make up a much larger proportion of our guests over the next three years," said Marriott Digital senior vice president George Corbin.

"Millions of customers already use Marriott Mobile to quickly book a hotel, check-in, or check out. Now, Apple Pay can make it virtually effortless."

The company expects to start rolling out Apple Pay this summer beginning at some of its hotels in the United States including The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park; EDITION Miami; San Francisco Marriott Marquis; and Courtyard Los Angeles L.A. Live.

In 2013, it already launched mobile check-in and check-out on its smartphone app. With the app, guests can now access these services at 4,000 hotels worldwide, in addition to finding and booking a hotel stay.
