Nobody quite knew what to expect from the McQ show at London Fashion Week - as the smaller line from Alexander McQueen, McQ had never had it’s own show before, and the line was fairly straightforward McQueen classic shapes. On Monday night, however, McQ stepped out of the shadows to assert itself as a fashion force to be reckoned with, putting on one of the most talked about shows at Fashion Week.
A star-studded audience including Anna Wintour, Samantha Cameron and Salma Hayek took their seats next to a catwalk carpeted with leaves and amongst wild and wintery trees. The lighting was dark and dramatic, befitting of the first looks to come down the runway – a selection of khaki, strongly military-inspired pieces reminiscent of 1940’s uniforms. Everything was double-breasted and accessorised with a wide leather belt, while skirts were full with a front pleat. Utilitarian tones of khaki morphed into forest green (a leather coat looked especially lovely in this colour) before segueing into blue tartan, black leather and russet velvet. Elbow length leather gloves completed most looks along with round-toe, bondage strap heels or S&M lace up boots (delicious).
The final eveningwear looks were breathtaking – a vision of prom dresses covered in flowers, brocade, lace appliqué and trimmed with tulle. An ethereal Kristin McMenamy closed the show by pulling a rope from underneath the leaves and following it to reveal a shed set in a woodland, where she and the audience went for a post-show booze up. Now that is our kind of fashion show.
