Taking a break from hosting the Governor's Dinner at the White House, the first lady appeared on screen wearing a Great Gatsby style, sparkly sequin dress.
She teamed the art deco gown with some Sutra Silver at Fragments chandelier earrings, and her hair was pulled back in a low bun with her controversial fringe worn straight.
It was the first time a first lady has ever presented an Academy Award.
The President's wife praised the work of the movie industry, saying that this year's nominated films had, 'made us laugh, made us weep and grip our armrests just a little bit tighter.'
She continued, 'They reminded us we can overcome any obstacles if we dig deep enough and hard enough. They are especially important for young people. Everyday they engage in the arts, they learn to open their imaginations ... and strive to reach those dreams.'
Ben Affleck said backstage after collecting the award for Argo, 'The fact that it was the first lady was an enormous honour ... it was very cool.'
On the red carpet, George Clooney's girlfriend Stacy Keibler continued the metallic trend, also choosing a dress by the Indian born, American designer.
