Berlin, New York, Paris, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Dublin, London, Tokyo, Mexico, Barcelona, Delhi, Seoul and Melbourne are among the most social destinations in the world according to check-ins via social network Facebook over the past three years.
To discover the top landmarks around the globe, Facebook aggregated check-ins via its site and third-party apps using the Facebook API. The data dates back to August 2010 when check-ins were first launched.
Some of the interesting facts Facebook uncovered related to check-ins via the site were that sports stadiums and arenas were some of the most popular venues in the world (7 of the number-1-ranked landmarks across the top 25 most social cities were stadiums or arenas); public areas including squares, avenues and parks were second on the list of the most popular check-in destinations (6 out of 25); and cities with warmer climates had more outdoor check-ins than their colder counterparts.
The data revealed that shopping centers, amusement parks and restaurants were popular with Facebook users around the globe.
“Looking deeper into the data, we saw that shopping is popular internationally: malls and outdoor markets appear within the top 10 landmarks for 19 of 25 cities, including Sao Paulo's Mercado Municipal, Seoul's Dongdaeum and Melbourne's Queen Victoria market. Amusement parks like Johannesburg's Gold Reef City, Moscow's Gorky Park, Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens and Seoul's Lotte World were among the top 10 places to check-in. Restaurants like the Hard Rock Cafes in Buenos Aires, Delhi and Barcelona, TGI Fridays in Norway, and Bella Paulista Casa de Paes in Sao Paulo were favorites too,” said Facebook.
In 2011 location-based social network foursquare revealed that UK’s Manchester was the rudest city in the world. At the time Manchester was found to be the city with the highest percentage of foursquare “tips” containing curse words.
