No FBI agents in Indonesian prisons: Minister

Jakarta (The Jakarta Post/ANN) - Indonesia's Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsuddin denied accusations that his office had given access to agents of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to the country's prisons to interrogate terror convicts.

"There is no such thing," Amir said, responding to a recent report released by the Indonesian Police Watch (IPW) that alleged the ministry had set up rooms in a number of prisons in the country where FBI agents could interrogate terror suspects.

IPW said that in return for the access, the ministry was paid Rp 1 trillion (US$110 million) per year. The outfit also alleged that 14 officials from the ministry were taken on a trip to Guantanamo Bay as part of the deal.

Amir also denied such allegations, but added that there were indeed 11 officials from the ministry who did make the trip to the US.

Amir was quoted by kompas.com as saying that the IPW should be more judicious in its future reports.
