An online appeal for funds, to help an Indian foreign domestic worker in Singapore, has been making its rounds. The helper suffered from a brain aneurysm recently.

Kawaljeet Kaur, who was working for an Indian expatriate family in Singapore, has so far undergone one surgery and may need multiple operations.

A Facebook group ‘Help Kawaljeet Kaur’ has been created to raise funds to cover Kawaljeet’s medical expenses.

The creators of the Facebook page wrote that Kawaljeet complained of a headache and nausea, and lost consciousness on Sunday.

She was admitted to Changi General Hospital and underwent one surgery, said the page authors.

A tax invoice posted on the page showed Kawaljeet was admitted to Changi General Hospital on 3 May and that the bill was $15,304.13.

Medical costs could go up to between $50,000 and $100,000, said the page authors. They also said foreign domestic worker insurance covers only up to $15,000.

One of Kawaljeet’s employers, Indian expatriate Manisha Sharma posted an update to the page around 9am Tuesday morning saying that Kawaljeet was off the ventilator, but was unable to move her right leg and right hand.

Manisha said the doctors could not confirm whether the paralysis was temporary or permanent.

A check by Yahoo Singapore with Changi General Hospital confirmed that a Kawaljeet Kaur was warded as of Tuesday afternoon but the hospital could not provide other details, citing patient confidentiality.

Yahoo Singapore also tried calling the phone number listed on the Facebook page but there was no answer.
