Former People’s Action Party candidate for Punggol East, Dr Koh Poh Koon, has been named chairman-designate of the ruling party’s branch in the single member constituency.

Channel NewsAsia reported on Tuesday that the 40-year-old colorectal surgeon would work alongside Teo Ser Luck, who is Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC’s Member for Parliament (MP).

Teo will also continue as grassroots advisor for Punggol East where Workers’ Party candidate Lee Li Lian won a decisive victory against Koh in the recent by-election.

Teo told reporters at the sidelines of a food distribution programme that the party would have to scale down other initiatives as they are no longer in charge of the constituency.

He explained that it would also be difficult for them to facilitate childcare centres in the area.

“We need to respect the decisions of the voters and we also need to respect the MP for the area and I think that is exactly what we are doing today and we do what we can in terms of serving the residents in our own way. Big or small way, we hope that it's beneficial for the residents here,” Teo was quoted by the Channel NewsAsia as saying.
