Parkway Parade's Borders to close on 26 September

The Borders branch at Parkway Parade will close permanently come Monday 9 pm.

The book shop has started a final closing down sale with a 70 per cent discount on all stock in the store.

This closure of Borders' only remaining outlet here comes shortly after its flagship store at Wheelock Place shut down suddenly in August due to a rental dispute with the landlord.

In a statement, Tim Reid of Ferrier Hodgson, the judicial manager of Borders, said that Borders USA had terminated the brand license agreement with Borders Singapore on Wednesday. The latter has therefore to stop all activities authorised through the agreement.

Borders Singapore had secured rights to the use of the “Borders” brand and intellectual property rights through a brand license agreement that was secured when the Australian, New Zealand and Singaporean Borders operations were purchased from Borders USA.

Reid said he was offered an extension of the lease of Borders' Parkway Parade store, which was to expire at the end of October, but "the response from customers to the sale we have been running has been so pleasing that the economics of extending the lease were not persuading."

Reid added that he will soon advise creditors, including gift card holders, how he proposes to deal with their claims.

“Finally, I would like to thank the customers of Borders who have, over the last several weeks, continued to support the company. I know that the staff have appreciated the frequent kind and encouraging words many customers have expressed to them. It is certainly a sad time," he said.

i agree that there are so many free-riders.
however, the closure of borders was inevitable after the US parent company went bankrupt.

From the looks of things, either Kinokuniya or Times! Popular already has a store across the road! Been there for ages!

Gone are the days when I smelled the unmistakable scent of books and people lazing at Borders.
Alas, these people didn't help Borders to stay afloat but only know how to enjoy the relax atmosphere created for them !

Too bad so many ppl can't appreciate Borders, that they abuse it and indirectly contributed to its closure. Can't understand how ppl can stand there for hours to read books. I'd rather read it at home with my tea. :(

@Tame, yup, sad but true, people don't see the writings on the wall until it's too late and then they regret cos they lost their 'cosy corner' for good.....you don't see this happening in Popular or any other bookshops cos they are more business-like and would never entertain people browising and dirtying their merchandise.....@Viona I, can understand where it is that you're coming from but unfortunately while some people can afford the books, they simply cannot brew a good tea to go with it at home.......and vice versa.

I think we are now probably left with Popular and Book Kinokuniya.

Borders closed because of its poor management in the US, which affected its stores globally. In S'pore its more of a hangout place than a bookstore.

formerly there were three (3) big book stores in town namely MPH, Borders and the one recently where the MD resigned. Now the one still left standing on its own is of course the last one. In this tough world of business, the saying that the fittest will survive holds truth to its phylosophy.
