Perth Bersih 4 rally takes off with record 1,300 participants

About 1,300 people turned up for the Bersih 4 rally held at Langley Park in the city of Perth, western Australia today, the highest participation recorded so far for such gatherings. Organisers Bersihkan Malaysia Perth (BMP) and Perth Student Progressive Party (PPP) confirmed the turnout, adding that the figure doubled that of the last Bersih rally. BMP spokesman Jordan Sugunasingam said the number recorded so far was a more than 100% increase from Bersih 3.0. "There are about 20,000 Malaysians residing in Perth in which includes children. For Bersih 2.0, we had about 200 people and about 500 for Bersih 3," said Jordan, who was born in Kuala Lumpur. "By the increase of attendance, it shows the number of Malaysians who know what the government is doing and care about it." He also said: "We hope by turning in numbers, we are making the world see what is going on in Malaysia." "We want the world to know about this and our demand to the government and when they (the government) do visit these countries, they will know what their people's perception on them," he added. Perth is among other cities in Australia who held Global Bersih today including Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. The Perth Umno club was invited to join the Perth rally but declined the invitation. The crowd chanted rally slogans and listened to talks from Malaysians and Singaporeans who shared their belief in clean elections. – August 29, 2015.
