PM Lee says Singapore will favor its citizens

SINGAPORE (AP) — Singapore's prime minister says his government will seek to favor its citizens after a backlash against a surge in foreign workers.

Lee Hsien Loong said in a speech Sunday the government will build 50,000 apartments during this year and next to help stabilize a spike in housing prices.

He also said the government plans to cap the number of foreign university students while adding 17 percent more Singaporeans by 2015.

Lee said entry requirements will be made more stringent for some foreign workers. He said fewer foreign workers could lead to slower economic growth.

Opposition parties blamed foreign workers for soaring housing prices, crowded public transportation and stagnant wage growth during May's parliamentary election campaign.

Every country has its challenge from its growing pain. It is a hard choice to make, either seek growth by open to foreign talent to revitalise the economy or invest on Singaporean to empower the sense of a nation.

The problem I see, is that more foreigners can only make wages stabilize and competitive. When too much consumers going for the same goods and services, it drive prices up. When incomes growth stagnant and cost of living increase, it weakens the citizens. The younger generations will face more challenges than their parent. They could not afford a government flat, which the older generation could in lesser income.

If foreigners wants to be a Singaporean and willing to stay and contribute, they are welcome. If unqualified professionals compete for jobs for lesser pay, then it is an understandable Singaporean woes.

PM Lee had heard from Singaporean in the recent election and it is time to adjust.

Singapore like America has lazy people who will not do certain work because it is below their dignity. And when a unemployed Singapore person does apply for a lesser job they are told they are to qualified. Just like America.

It is quite frightening to know that 25% of the Singapore population are newly-recruited citizens, as, maybe, in next 2 elections if PAP can still retain power, the newly-recruited citizens may stood at around 35-40% to turn the tide against Singapore-born citizens in voting power (as 10-15% of the Singapore population will be die-hard PAP supportors - i.e. civil servants who are scared of their rice-bowl job to vote Opposition, rich and high-paying Singaporeans who may felt that their wealth may be reduced by voting Opposition.

I just hope that when there is a war, these newly-recruited citizens will not leave as easily as they become Singapore citizens.

      So sad for Singapore-born Singaporeans....

It is good for the leader to address these issue broadly, even if it is yet to see these solution works. It act as a calming antidote and though there will still bound to be backlashes. Nevertheless, we will wait and see if these policies will truly benefits the true bred Singaporeans as we are truly concerned about what is going on at the moment and having the sense of belonging back. Majulah Singapura.

easiest way to solve a problem is to remove the person/s responsible for the problem.

      2016 vote for the alternative.

PAP is NOT interested to solve the problems in housing, transportation and unfait=r job competition brought by FTrash. JUST COSMETIC touches.

It is an open secret that even in the government dept or statutory board organization, those above 40 will be less considered especially with overseas training or for employment. They will 'employ' those on the high end of the organization. This let to the HR in the private sector doing the same. No one will write a clear policy on these matters, no not one but almost all companies practice this kind of approach not employing older workers.

Additionally, if say a department head is a foreigner or even on in HR, you will find that his flock from his home country will eventually flood the organization.

I hope when PM said Singaporeans he meant only Singapore Citizens and NOT PRs, though they have stayed here for long maybe, but not citizen yet. So tell all your ministries please do not give statistics that group Singapore citizens with PRs. Make a distinction with each group so that the public will know the actual situation and truth.

Those Singaporeans who served NS should have FREE Outpatient Medical Care at least. Using medisave to pay for outpatient care is same as using own money.... :( We drew $200/mth NS allowance instead of our $1500/mth pay for 2.5 yrs and some of us got permanent injuries thru NS.

Thank you Mr Lee. It is time but isnt it a bit too late? I agree with you that singaporeans need foreign workers to make its economy vibrant but how about immigration issues? Please don not sideline this issue cos this also means more will become citizens(esp from china) and this lot will also contend with us citizens. Then we have no cause to complain cos we are fighting with our own"citizens",who are actually from India, and China. Look at the problems we have from China. All the years we were taught at proper queueing at bus stops, or waiting areas, etc, courtesy have all vanished. We have encountered so many chinese who occupied seats at food centres but not sitting on them. They just want the seats all to themselves--The selfish lot! I encountered them in japan with similar attitudes. They occupy seats but refused to let others have them even if they do not sit on them. Therefore, Mr. lee, the next issue is immigration.

Isnt it too late to be stringent with foreigners coming into singapore now?! singaporeans are being despised by all these foreign trash yet the government tell us not to be negative towards them? so much for this being HOME. Overcrowding on such a small island, these foreign "talents" should just go back to where they come from, the only talent they have is talking loudly and the lack of courtesy.
