Police: Houston under water when found in bathtub

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Whitney Houston was under water and apparently unconscious when she was found in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub, police said Monday, as the singer's family prepared to send her body to her native New Jersey for a funeral.

The singer was found Saturday by a member of her personal staff at approximately 3:30 p.m. She was pulled from the tub by members of her staff, and hotel security was promptly notified, Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen said.

Further details of Houston's death are not being released to preserve the integrity of the investigation, he said.

"As of right now, it's not a criminal investigation," Rosen told a news conference. "We have concluded our portion of the investigation at the hotel."

Rosen said it was a coroner's case and police were awaiting the determination of the cause of death. The coroner's office says toxicology testing is continuing.

There were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston's body, but officials were not ruling out any causes of death until they have toxicology results, which will likely take weeks to obtain.

Houston struggled for years with addiction to cocaine, marijuana and pills, which took a toll on her voice.

However, Bishop T.D. Jakes, a Texas minister and producer on Houston's final film project, a re-make of the 1970s release "Sparkle," said he saw no signs she was having any substance issues.

He said Houston was a complete professional and moved the cast and crew to tears two months ago when she sang the gospel hymn "Her Eyes on the Sparrow" for a scene shot in Detroit.

Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said the body was released late Monday morning. He would not say where the body was taken but said that typically a family will work with a funeral home to make arrangements.

Two people who have spoken with Houston's family said the singer's body will be taken home to New Jersey late Monday for a funeral to be held at week's end.

The two spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak for the family and funeral arrangements weren't complete. They said Houston's family has raised the possibility of holding a wake Thursday and funeral Friday at Newark's Prudential Center, which can seat about 18,000.

The 48-year-old singer was found unresponsive in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel just hours before she was supposed to appear at a pre-Grammy gala.

The Grammys themselves were in part a memorial to Houston, a six-time winner. LL Cool J introduced a clip near the start of the show of a glowing Houston singing her signature ballad, a cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You."

A sensation from her first album, Houston was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. She awed millions with soaring, but disciplined vocals rooted in gospel and polished for the masses, a bridge between the earthy passion of her godmother, Aretha Franklin, and the bouncy pop of her cousin, Dionne Warwick.

Her death sounds a lot like Jim Morrison's death... and Judy Garland... and Elvis Presley....

That's EXACTLY the way it was, too. All those people died by their own hand, accidently, yes, but by their own hand.

Drugs and tobacco will show up in your demise. You can make less of a killer but no matter how good it might make you feel it going to get you. Its unfortunate that when most people find out it is too late. Lungs, heart, and kidneys thats what drugs alcohol, tobacco destroy.

The gospel song is correctly titled "His Eyes Are On The Sparrow", not "Her Eyes On the Sparrow" as stated in the article.
      • Dwedry 3 months ago
Actually, it's "His Eye is on the Sparrow".

The comments I have been reading are way beyond cruel. A woman is dead. It doesn't matter how or why. What does matter is that she left behind a young daughter who will be forever changed by this event. Enough racism, enough hatred. Fan or not of Whitney Houston, she lived and breathed and left her mark on this world and an imprint in the heart of her daughter who isn't even 20 years old. There will be many milestones in her life that will be marred due to her mother not being there. Have a heart, people.

Once again, when is the ignorant Hollywood cocoon waking up and realizes that alcohol and drug addiction is deadly. Those posh, speedy in’n’out rehabs are worthless if the patient is send back into the old environment and left to their chances.

Prescription drugs?!! You mean a serious crack cocaine addiction- It's well known that she was a crack head. So stop trying to make it seem so glamorous!
      • Sybil 3 months ago
Well, Bill, you are certainly seeing glamour where I do not. There is nothing glamerous about siezing up in yr bath tub due to long term addiction. Most addicts die of their favorite substance. I didnt make a moral comment, it was a medical diagnosis, Heart Failure due to long term alcohol use and percription drug abuse. This combo usually gets the high flyers.

Out of the last 100 celebrities found dead in a hotel, 100 of them died from an overdose of some kind. So did ya think maybe this time it was a bungee jumping accident? Nail polishing accident? Be for real.

I have read about 10 comments and am stunned at some of the trashy hick things people have said..."rot in hell" someone said... I'm just glad that person spends their time lurking on message boards instead of the streets.

I know there are some things that are better left unsaid, but I'm going to say this anyway. I have become disgusted with the honor given to celebrities who have died because of their drug/alcohol abuse. These people were blessed with a talent that was so appreciated by others that they became famous, wealthy, and honored for their abilities. Then, because of their inherent human weaknesses and love of self they turn to chemical substances, I suppose, because they believe those chemicals will make their lives more bearable, more fun, more fulfilling....whatever the reason. Whitney Houston, Elvis, Curt Kobain, Keith Whitley, Janis Joplin, Jimmie Hendrix, Michael Jackson, and I'm sure many others are responsible for their deaths. What a bunch of pitiful, selfish losers! They don't deserve honor or respect. The best that can be done with them now is to use their pitiful examples to keep other from meeting the same consequences.

She was a loving person, says everyone who KNEW her. Her daughter must be devistated, only 18. She was sick. That doesn't take from the fact that she was beautiful, and talented, and had a life. It's sad, and to make moronic jokes about someone who has died tragically, I can't help but think you are "asking for it". It's so sad. Look how many have been taken by or because of the toll drugs took on their body. Only a person who is addicted can understand. Be glad that you're not one of those people. Say something decent, or be quiet.

I pray for the mother and her family. People have said that it is her ex's fault. I disagree. We all have to be responsible for our own actions. Those that believe in Christ knows that he can get one through some horrific times. Being a christian is not easy. You must have faith in God and try to hold on until the chnage comes.

Sad to hear what has happens and at the same time, I thank God for keeping me everyday thus far.
