Queenstown impresses royal couple

By Romesh Navaratnarajah:Britain's Prince William and his wife Catherine visited Strathmore Green in Queenstown yesterday as part of their whirlwind tour of Singapore.

Accompanied by MP Indranee Rajah, HDB Chairman James Koh, and PA Chief Executive Director Yam Ah Mee, the royal couple enjoyed a short tour of the five-block estate.

They were welcomed by a Chinese lion dance troupe, Malay kompang group and Indian drummers. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also watched community groups perform taichi and silat.

"Prince William expressed interest in the silat, wanting to know whether this was done as part of the community activities. They were quite interested to see that a lot of it was fitness related," said Rajah.

The couple also took time out to chat with several residents and dropped by Queenstown Rainbow Centre to spend time with special needs children.

Queenstown is one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore and was named after Queen Elizabeth II. The couple also visited Gardens by the Bay yesterday.

Their three-day visit to Singapore is part of a nine-day Asia Pacific tour to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. They will also travel to Malaysia, the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu. Related Stories:Million dollar HDB deal almost final 1,135 couples cancelled flat bookings PRC new citizen buys million-dollar HDB
