All races encouraged to learn Chinese language, says Wee – Bernama

Students from other ethnic groups were encouraged to learn the Chinese language as an additional language to ensure the success of the Malaysian Education Blueprint (PPPM) 2013-2015.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said the essence of the PPPM showed that the government wanted to make the language as the third language in the country.

"In the PPPM, we describe our dream to make Chinese as the third language... it was obvious. So we would encourage everyone to learn the language.

"We also have a vernacular school system where 15% of its students are from other ethnic groups (non-Chinese). This of course will provide an opportunity to the non-Chinese student to deepen their Chinese language proficiency," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was met by reporters after officiating the Chinese Language Teaching and Learning Enhancement Course in the Secondary School.

He said the students were also encouraged to master other languages to be more competitive.

"This could be one of the advantages of Malaysians, that is to be able to speak multiple languages. Anyway, now it's a worldwide trend where people are starting to learn other languages besides their mother tongue and the English language," he said. – Bernama, March 15, 2015.
