MOSCOW, May 11 - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev plans to meet British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit in Japan in July, the Kremlin's press service said on Sunday.
"An agreement has been reached to prepare a bilateral meeting at the highest level during the Group of Eight summit in Japan," the Kremlin said in a statement. Brown phoned Medvedev to congratulate him on taking over as president.
Britain and Russia are linked by tens of billions of dollars in trade and bilateral investments, including major stakes in oil projects held by BP and Royal Dutch Shell .
But political relations last year slumped to their lowest level since the Cold War, with both sides expelling diplomats after Moscow refused to extradite a former KGB bodyguard suspected by Britain of poisoning Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko.
The Kremlin said that during their conversation, Brown and Medvedev had also discussed deepening economic ties and how to develop relations in other areas.
