CHICAGO - Global spending on tennis sponsorships in 2008 is expected to rise at a lower rate than the year before due to the sluggish economy and fallout in the financial services sector, a firm that tracks such spending said on Friday. Sponsorship spending on amateur and pro tennis tournaments, leagues and sanctioning bodies will total $573.5 million this year, up 8 percent from 2007, according to Chicago-based IEG, which is owned by advertising giant WPP Group.

Standard return to Merseyside to face Everton

MONACO - Standard Liege of Belgium, who were narrowly eliminated from the Champions League by Liverpool on Wednesday, will return to Merseyside to face Everton in the first round of the UEFA Cup. IOC to bring case against Greek coach

ATHENS - The International Olympic Committee has served a lawsuit against the coach of former Greek Olympic champion Fani Halkia who tested positive for drugs during the Beijing Olympics. International Olympic Committee lawyer Petros Mahas told Reuters the IOC had already presented its evidence to Greek prosecutors to bring charges against George Panagiotopoulos for breaking the country's anti-doping laws.
