Michael Jackson turns 50, shadow of a superstar

LOS ANGELES - Singer Michael Jackson turned 50 on Friday, a shadow of the superstar once known as the "King of Pop" whose records thrilled millions before his bizarre personal life eclipsed his musical brilliance. Unlike Madonna's 50th birthday bash and launch of another world tour earlier this month, the singer who wishes he was Peter Pan appears to have no special celebrations planned and a much-touted musical comeback has so far come to nothing.

Hollywood asks: who needs Harry Potter?

LOS ANGELES - Boy wizard Harry Potter won't be whipping up his magic when the fall film season begins next week, but Hollywood is hoping momentum from summer hits like "The Dark Knight" and a wide mix of new movies will keep audiences happy into the holidays. Two weeks ago, Warner Bros. yanked "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" from a November release and pushed it to next July, which could spell trouble at box offices because the previous four "Potter" films averaged $920 million in worldwide ticket sales. That is a lot of movie magic.

The film is the first of five U.S. entries to appear in the main competition at the Venice film festival, and was warmly applauded by critics and journalists on Friday at a press screening ahead of its red carpet world premiere.

David Duchovny's sex disorder likened to alcoholism

HAVANA - A Cuban punk rocker whose songs have ridiculed the Cuban government went to court in handcuffs on Friday charged with "social dangerousness," which could bring a prison sentence of up to four years. Gorki Aguila, 39, received applause and shouts of support from about 15 friends as he was taken from a police car up the steps of the Havana court, which had drawn a crowd of foreign diplomats, foreign correspondents and government press officials during the day.

Detective to stars, attorney guilty of wiretapping

LOS ANGELES - A private detective who once worked for Hollywood stars and a prominent attorney were convicted on Friday of federal wiretapping and conspiracy charges in a case stemming from billionaire Kirk Kerkorian's bitter child support dispute. A jury found sleuth Anthony Pellicano, 64, guilty of tapping the phones of Lisa Bonder, Kerkorian's ex-wife, in 2002, said Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney.

Coen brothers' spy comedy divides Venice critics

VENICE - The Coen brothers' latest film, the madcap comedy "Burn After Reading," has sharply divided the critics, unlike last year's acclaimed "No Country For Old Men" which won four Oscars including best picture. Early reviews of the eagerly-awaited picture have begun to appear following its world premiere at the Venice film festival on Wednesday, which brought A-listers George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and hundreds of screaming fans, to the red carpet.

New film adds to intrigue of Puccini love life

VENICE - A new film on Giacomo Puccini has uncovered letters and documents suggesting the composer may have a second living descendant, in a tangled tale of infidelity and vengeance befitting one of his operas. "Puccini e la Fanciulla" , which premieres at the Venice film festival on Friday, has already attracted the ire of Simonetta Puccini, the composer's only known living heir until now.
