Arsenal beat Liege 2-0 to go through in top spot

LONDON - Arsenal secured their place in the knockout phase of the Champions League for the 10th successive season when a comfortable 2-0 win over Standard Liege secured top spot in Group H with a game to spare on Tuesday.

A slip by Liege defender Landry Mulemo let in Samir Nasri for the opening goal after 35 minutes and Denilson smacked in a swerving 30-metre second at the end of the first half.

Arsenal cruised through the second half for a victory that takes them to 13 points, six clear of Olympiakos Piraeus after their goalless draw at AZ Alkmaar.

Liege hit the woodwork twice through Dieudonne Mbokani at 0-0 but were generally second-best and now, with four points, need to win their last game at home to Alkmaar and hope Arsenal beat Olympiakos at the Emirates to progress on their better head-to-head record against the Greeks.
