    22-year-old dies after StanChart half-marathon

A young man died after competing in the Standard Chartered (StanChart) half-marathon in Singapore on Sunday morning.

Singapore Management University undergraduate Malcolm Sng was 22 years old, and had collapsed after finishing the 21km race at the Padang at about 8:30am.

Sng had finished the run in 1 hour, 53 minutes and 20 seconds, according to the tracking system on the marathon's website.

The StanChart marathon organising committee said he was attended to immediately and sent to Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where he died an hour after he collapsed.

Sng’s family has since been notified of his death, and the organising committee will be assisting the police in their investigation.

Sng was in his first year at SMU's Lee Kong Chian Business School, and was previously from Nanyang Polytechnic, reported The New Paper.

An acquaintance of his told Yahoo! Singapore that he was a logistics officer in SMU Symphonia, the school's band, and played clarinet.

Sng's family described him as a "filial child" to his elder relatives, and a "responsible role model" to his siblings and friends.

"His dedication towards sports and music is undeniable, as his many accolades (have) shown... he will be missed dearly, and will always live in our hearts," they said.

He leaves behind his parents Daniel Toon and Rena, and two sisters, Samantha and Victoria.

Singaporeans have since taken to social media to express their condolences and thoughts for Sng.

Member of Parliament for Yuhua Single Member Constituency Grace Fu wrote on her Facebook wall: "My thoughts are with the family of Malcolm Sng. The sudden passing of a young, bright and energetic man must be a devastating shock to the family. May his soul rest in peace."

Twitter user @zihern commented on Sng's half-marathon timing of 1:53:20, saying it was a "remarkable result", while another user @origamihoper tweeted, "RIP Malcolm Sng, once a golden bayonet from my Recce Commander course."

Sad.. my sympathy goes to the family. For the next group of runners ;;;;; if you cannot tahan just give up... don't try to be a hero... it is not worth it. The organisers get the credit and the medal , you know. Any way you need vigorous training also. Just be a plain fellow don't ever try to kay gou.

the organiser should bear some responsibility because they want more participants and ppl just sign for it blindly or being encouraged by friends to make up the group

We so often hear things like : "it's all in the mind" when someone thinks they can just do what they are determined/driven to do. So, this will hopefully wake those "psychos" up. PLEASE... know thy limits before a sports event turns into a suicidal event. Find your own talent. It's just like not everyone is/can be a Mohd Ali.

Yup..agree..I was running yest and saw many runners 10-15 yrs younger than me who overtook me abt 1km b4 reaching the finishing line..10-15 yrs ago, I would run faster to catch up and overtook them..but yesteday, i told myself that my "glory" days were over...so i juz took my own sweet time to finish my race..not 42km, not 21km...but 10km :)

Thk. God who opened your mind that "glory" days were over. So forget your run next year or the coming event for your family's sake

RIP, and condolences to the family. Proper training is required to condition oneself for the grueling run to minimize the risk of injury or even death. If a person can run 2.4k at 9 minutes, does not mean he is automatically ready for a 21km.

Even the fittest athlete can just suddenly drop dead for no apparent reason. I remember Marc Vivien Foe who once played for West Ham United. He collapsed during a football match and passed away just like that.....! Moral of the story is : Never take your life for granted! Live it to the fullest every single day for no one knows when our exact expiry date is............

The sportman is trained and also their trade. They are already for that and their families are compensated, but not us.We gained only this sentence from friends only " Wow, You, Very stong, can run so long distance."

        @ Peter Pan:
Sometimes, that is all people want. Just look at the number of participants stopping to pose for pictures at distance markers and the number of people stopping to take a photo just before the start line. After the event, just log on to your facebook (if you have one - i know not everybody has one), and look at the number of people crowing about their runs (some with pics attached). Tell any one of them "Wah, you so sporty ah!", and they will practically glow. :\

I took part in the 10km run. As I ran, I was wondering why the heck I paid $42 just to run. Then I realised we have all been used! By the organising committee to fulfill their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in their job! That committee page in the event booklet is redundant. Who the heck bothers who they are, except their bosses?

running sld be free. dunno why ppl want to pay to run.

Race pack was useless and so was race day. Didn't come home with runners high either. Most expensive race ever. Never again.

Bravo Brothers! Finally intelligent comments! Thanks for your comment. Hopefully we will save lives and prevent this sort of stupid event from ever being organised.
We are not talking about just orthopedic injuries. we are talking about lost of a life. One life too many. There are many other safer ways to raise funds.

Causes of heart attack.......60% due to Food,20% due to life-style and 20% due to stress.
here is help for anyone with high blood cholestrol.....1)take half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder(available at provision shops) with a little warm water.stir and consume first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. 2)Boil some lemon grass in a pot of water.after boiling for sometime, remove lemon grass and store the water in bottles.u may store them in the fridge too.drink with pleasure as it helps reduce high blood cholestrol, body odour and helps to clean ur kidneys too.i hv been doing it for the last four years and hv a very healthy cholestrol level and hv even dumped my prescribed medication and hv not seen the doctors since my heart attack in 2006.

This death after a running exercise is very common here. Many reservists died after their IPPT or Residential Training, even without past record of any heart ailment. Unfortunately, even the healthy young teenagers serving their NS are not spare from this death. This death is avoidable if we do not force ourselves to the extreme.

This sort of things happens even to the seemingly very fit people. It may be 42km, it may be 1km. No way to prevent, too few tell tale signs. Very healthy people also die in their sleep. When it comes, it comes..

May this young runner Rest in Peace and Condolences to his family. And no one should blame the organizers either as there is no way to check the health status of every runners. There had also been cases of fit runners who just collapsed during their routine running. There is always risk in whatever we do. I also take part in many running events (incl today's SCSM FM) due to my own personal passion although I am also on low dosage of precautionary medication for high blood pressure.

I read somewhere that when a person is under stress, a lot of histamine is produced by the body. In order to counter the histamine, the body then produced adrenaline. Too much adrenaline can lead to a heart attack. Some people are lucky if they just feel weak and pass out and upon drinking copious amount of water recover. Perhaps, that's why we have people who died although they appear to be fit and healthy. Any doctor out there who can determine if this is true, please comment and educate the public to prevent further mishaps. Thanks.

I did the 42km this morning, u need months of training and preparation to condition yrself well for long distant running. It sad to hear such news, only ourself will know our body condition and make adjustment if need to.

stop being so judgmental. no-one can just run and finish a 21K without having been at least a regular runner. this could happen even to champions. i remember an american (forgot his name) who was a pretty good marathon runner and even authored a few books on the subject. one day, he was running in a race as usual and just collapsed. he never had any symptoms prior to this and this just happened. when his body was autopsied, only then they found the probable cause. there are many conditions where there are no symptoms, or the condition is hard to detect.

at least that 21-year old guy died doing what he wanted to do. that's how i'd want to go.
