22-year-old dies after StanChart half-marathon

A young man died after competing in the Standard Chartered (StanChart) half-marathon in Singapore on Sunday morning.
 
Singapore Management University undergraduate Malcolm Sng was 22 years old, and had collapsed after finishing the 21km race at the Padang at about 8:30am.

Sng had finished the run in 1 hour, 53 minutes and 20 seconds, according to the tracking system on the marathon's website.
 
The StanChart marathon organising committee said he was attended to immediately and sent to Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where he died an hour after he collapsed.

Sng’s family has since been notified of his death, and the organising committee will be assisting the police in their investigation.

Sng was in his first year at SMU's Lee Kong Chian Business School, and was previously from Nanyang Polytechnic, reported The New Paper.

An acquaintance of his told Yahoo! Singapore that he was a logistics officer in SMU Symphonia, the school's band, and played clarinet.

Sng's family described him as a "filial child" to his elder relatives, and a "responsible role model" to his siblings and friends.

"His dedication towards sports and music is undeniable, as his many accolades (have) shown... he will be missed dearly, and will always live in our hearts," they said.

He leaves behind his parents Daniel Toon and Rena, and two sisters, Samantha and Victoria.

Singaporeans have since taken to social media to express their condolences and thoughts for Sng.

Member of Parliament for Yuhua Single Member Constituency Grace Fu wrote on her Facebook wall: "My thoughts are with the family of Malcolm Sng. The sudden passing of a young, bright and energetic man must be a devastating shock to the family. May his soul rest in peace."

Twitter user @zihern commented on Sng's half-marathon timing of 1:53:20, saying it was a "remarkable result", while another user @origamihoper tweeted, "RIP Malcolm Sng, once a golden bayonet from my Recce Commander course."
