SCDF ambulance explodes in Geylang

A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ambulance exploded in an open-air carpark in Geylang Saturday afternoon, burning seven vehicles around it.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze which broke out at 3:10pm, said SCDF in a press release on the same day.

The ambulance crew, who were responding to an emergency call, were attending to an elderly woman at the void deck of Block 120, Geylang East Central,

Witnesses said the ambulance, which had its beacon lights on, had exploded and burst into flames, sending columns of thick, black smoke into the air.

Within minutes of the blaze, a fire engine, two fire bikes and a Red Rhino arrived at the scene to douse the flames.

A witness told online portal Stomp that one of the affected cars belonged to his friend.

"The front of his car had totally melted from the heat. His car plate (was) totally gone," he wrote.

The elderly lady was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital by another ambulance.

The SCDF is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which may have been due to an engine fault.
