Searches for Amazon's Kindle boosted after NY Times paywall bypass announced

Following the New York Times's decision to implement a paywall on March 28, newspapers and blogs quickly spread the news of the Kindle's supposed paywall-jumping abilities, a feature that may have caused many internet shoppers to take a second look at the device, and search for information on the product.

Two Kindle-related search terms appeared in the top ten product searches in the days following the implementation of the paywall and Amazon's announcement that readers of the Times on Kindle effectively avoided paying extra fees. Unlike users of other e-readers who have to pay both an e-reader subscription fee and a paywall fee, Kindle users are granted full access to the New York Times after only subscribing to the basic New York Times e-reader service which costs around $20 per month.

Amazon competitor Barnes & Noble offers the same service to New York Times subscribers on its Nook e-reader, the company announced this week.

The data shows that people were searching for the large screen "Kindle DX" or simply the "Kindle" and that the majority of these searches came from the UK and United States.

Other popular products were humidifiers, games console the Xbox 360 and Canon's flagship SLR camera the T2i.

The top ten search terms with the most significant growth worldwide, in the last seven days, in the category Products as measured by Google Insights, recorded on April 6 were:
