Seven diet strategies that actually work

The Zone, the cabbage soup diet, the Master Cleanser lemonade diet -- how can you tell what is a fad and what really works? On March 4, health and science website LiveScience reported on seven diet tips that really work.

    1. Skip the corn syrup: One study revealed that rats who guzzled drinks made from high fructose corn syrup gained much more weight than those who drank sugar-sweetened drinks, even when the drinks contained the same amount of calories. High fructose corn syrup is found not only in soft drinks but frostings, bacon, candy bars, donuts, sausages, hot dogs, snack cakes, and a number of processed foods.

    2. Deal with your junk food addiction: Research reveals that junk food can affect your brain in ways similar to hard drugs, signaling dopamine receptors and changing behaviors, so that eating junk food becomes a top priority. One way to avoid the junk food temptation, experts say, is to avoid going long stretches of time without eating and watch portion sizes when you do indulge in a junk food treat.

    3. Eat at structured times: To avoid energy crashes, plan meals and snacks in advance and allow your body to settle into a predicatable routine. Avoid waiting more than three hours to have a small meal or snack.

    4. Eat your breakfast: Ideally, eat a protein-rich breakfast, such as scrambled eggs and toast, to feel more satiated throughout the rest of day, experts say. Plus the extra fat in the egg can have a long-lasting effect, leaving you feeling less starved at lunchtime and tempted to overindulge. In one study, men who had eggs and toast for breakfast ate about 400 fewer calories over the course of the day than those who ate a carb-heavy meal of a bagel with low-fat cream cheese and low-fat yogurt.

    5. Choose foods low on the glycemic index (or eat closer to nature): Selecting high-protein, high-fiber foods lower on the glycemic index, which refers to how quickly foods affect blood sugar, can stabilize energy levels. Foods higher on the index (sweets, white rice, white flour breads) spike blood sugar but then subsequently lead to an energy crash. Or as a backup plan, simply favor fresh foods, such as vegetables, meat, and fruits, over processed ones.

    6. Change your environment: A new study by Cornell University suggests that to be more successful in your diet, adjust your surroundings. Use a smaller plate, keep second helpings out of reach, and hide the sweet stuff to avoid mindless eating.

    7. Enjoy your food: When we pay attention to what we're eating -- color, texture, freshness, and seasoning -- "we are satisfied in a deeper way than stuffing of our stomachs could ever accomplish," reports LiveScience. Put down the smartphone or other distractions, take your time, and savor every bite.

Make a distinction between eating healthy and eating to diet, meaning losing weight. If consumption is more than what your body needs, there will be weight gain no matter how healthy the food.

Yes, but what does eating healthy entails and how much of the different types of nutrients do we need? Otherwise, the higher intake of food leading to weight gain is a no-brainer. We also need to exercise regularly; another no-brainer which was not mentioned.

This is not entirely true....if you eat incorrectly for your body-type you will put on body fat as this upsets individual bio-chemical requirements no matter what you do. You can succesfully lose bodyfat on a high-fat diet just as you can on a low-fat diet according to many principles of nutrition, exercise (type, frequency, duration, intensity, time under tension, reps, sets, loads, exercise selection....sports specific-this list is long! Also including fundamental lifestyle tips & reducing stress levels as stress upsets your endocrine system leading to adrenal fatigue, lack of ener----, weight gain & host of other health issues. Hydration is massively important as is the power of your mind with positive thinking, focus, good habits & dedication. To optimize health & wellness you must think about these four fundamentals & their repsective sub-catagories-these are the correct nutritional intake for your bodytype, lifestyle tips, correct training & exercise selection the right mental attitude & discipline....

all rubbish. jux eat healthy and wat's good for health, exercise regularly.
      • gonggong 1 year 2 months ago
To Misaki, know what we eating. Do you know what is sucrose?

To all, eating healthily doesn't mean we eat less. It means we need to know what we eating.

Eg eating fried food is as good as killing ourselves slowly. Drinking soda (with high sucrose) equally does the same suicidal.

Eat in moderation and exercise regularly, input must balance output. We should look at the fundamental as why we need to eat, for ener---- for the day activities.

I used to think likewise, until i read more about the modern food, which are processed.

Eg sugar replacement with corn sucrose. Read more to know why we so uptight about "diet". This term is far more than eating moderate.

Freedom of speech is non-exsistant here in the Truman show........shame on you Singapore & Yahoo for allowing imbeciles to review important comments aimed at helping & promoting health as to what (or what not) can be shown!! Such backward mentality of a so called 1st world country...You are all clones not capably of thinking or doing for yourselves within this nanny state.

i believe human system is unique for each individual and each of them will react differently for different kind of food, sometimes, even the same food will have different effect on the same person under different circumstances...................... hence one man's 'tonic' might be another man's 'poison'............................ as such i strong believe in eating all food in moderation and understand your own body system ...............................never force yourself to eat things that you dont enjoy just because other people say it is good for health....................... and most importantly DO NOT OVEREAT...................!! : - > (Alex, you agree?)

Remember that being slim is beautiful ..not thin and skinny. You may cut down on carbo but not totally because carbo gives fuel and ener---- which is essential.

the best is, eat healthy(fruits, veg). less of sugar-based stuff(coke, sweets, etc). small amount of tibits, exercise more than what u take. one week exercise 3 times. average 30mins. no walking at all. mantain the speed. when feeling like giving up, tell urself "(name) u can do it!!!" "just a little bit more!!! i can do it!!!"

Ever notice there's very little difference between Diet and Die? :-) Personally I rather be a fat but happy person than a healthy corpse.
