Singapore mulls blocking access to websites to stem online piracy

Singapore’s government is looking to block sites that infringe copyrighted material online, Senior Minister of State for Law Indranee Rajah said on Monday.

Speaking in parliament, Indranee said the law ministry and other agencies “are currently deliberating the role of site blocking" as a measure to counter easy access to pirated material on the internet.

"How we do this will need to be carefully considered," she added, noting that a review is being finalised, and that they will consult with the industry and public on the appropriate approach to site blocking in the "coming months".

In addition to site blocking, the government is also aiming to address copyright and digital piracy through public education, and the introduction and promotion of more legitimate content sources, she said.

The law ministry is also reviewing Singapore's Copyright Act to ensure not only that rights owners are protected, but also that consumers are given legitimate market access, and to keep up with emerging technologies and social norms.
