The Singapore People’s Party (SPP) has elected a new Central Executive Committee (CEC) after a mass resignation of its members last month.
Chiam See Tong remains as secretary-general of the party while his wife, Lina Loh Woon Lee has been elected as chairman.
The other key appointment holders in the CEC are vice chairman Jason Leong, treasurer Toh Hock Seng, assistant treasurer Yen Kim Khooi. Other members elected into the CEC include Yong Seng Fatt, Han Jook Kuang, Lee Kee Yang, Raj Nathan Rai and Jay Ting.
In January, Yahoo! Singapore reported the sudden mass resignation of six SPP CEC members. They include first assistant secretary-general Wilfred Leung, second assistant secretary-general Benjamin Pwee, organising secretary Ting Sze Jiang, Malay/Muslim Affairs head Mohamad Hamim bin Aliyas, his wife Juliana Juwahir, who is also a member of the party CEC, and SME businessmen affairs head David Tan.
Former party assistant secretary-general Benjamin Pwee apologised to voters and Singaporeans, stating that the CEC had failed to "create a new consultative collective team leadership for SPP”.
In response, Chiam issued a personal statement claiming the group attempted to advance collective leadership “in isolation from other CEC members.
The group further clarified that they had brought the matters Pwee raised and many others to the Chiams and to the rest of the CEC for "collective consultation, response and decision".
