Smash Bros, Destiny top Japanese sales

With two big releases last week, including Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and Destiny for all platforms, Japan’s top game for two months running Youkai Watch 2 Ganso/Honke was dethroned from its summer-long perch atop the Japanese sales charts.

While Super Smash Bros managed to clock in at just under 1 million sales, far ahead of every other game for the week, it was still slightly behind the 1.3 million pace set by Level 5’s smash hit during its own first week. Smash Bros sales are only for its first two days, so it may actually end up the better seller.

Destiny managed to grab two spots in the top 10, at positions 2 and 4, with the Playstation 4 version ranking two spots higher than the Playstation 3 release.

While 2 of the top 4 spots sounds impressive, it’s worth noting that the combined sales of 137,378 on both Sony platforms are still way off the 987,239 moved by the 3DS-only Smash Bros. The Xbox One version of Destiny wasn’t even in the top 30, with Titanfall the only game on the platform to rank—just two weeks after the console’s domestic release.

This may be good news for the PS4 in Japan, as it seems that for some new releases, the system is sporting a more active user base than the long in the tooth PS3.

Here’s a rundown of the top 10 with the platform in brackets and units sold in parentheses:

1.) [3DS] Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS (987,239)
2.) [PS4] Destiny (88,609)
