Stockholm visitors found few hotel bargains this summer

Tourists visiting Stockholm this summer would have had trouble finding bargains for their overnight stays, more so than in any other destination in Europe, a recent survey shows. The best summer hotel bargains were to be found in Athens, Budapest and Warsaw.

The survey published by the travel website cheaphotels.com looked at lodging rates of the cheapest available double room of 30 main European destinations between June and August 2012. By looking at each city's cheapest available room (at least 2-star hotels), the list reflects the minimum amount travelers had to spend to stay overnight.

The Swedish capital was the most expensive of the European destination in terms of hotel prices this summer, at an average of 111 euros a night. Stockholm was followed by Edinburgh with an average rate of 109 euros and Venice with 103 euros.

With an average cost of 23 euros a night, Athens recorded the cheapest hotel prices this summer. Surprisingly, Moscow and St Petersburg, considered to be some of the most expensive cities in the world, recorded some of the lowest room rates with 61 and 59 euros respectively.

The ranking is the result of an average price calculated for each destination. For the 30 European destinations, the price of the cheapest available double room (minimum 2-star hotel) was established for the following time periods: June 6-10, June 20-24, July 11-15, July 25-29, August 8-12 and August 15-19. The prices were generated about one month in advance of the respective periods. Only hotels located in the city center or less than one kilometer from it were considered.
