Strong 6.2-quake rattles Indonesia

A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Monday, geologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or tsunami warnings issued. The undersea quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 13 kilometres (eight miles) around 211 kms east of Manado on Sulawesi at 10:31 pm (1431 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. There was no warning or advisory posted on the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center website. Indonesia's Meteorological Service measured the quake at 6.9-magnitude but said it was unlikely to cause a tsunami. "There's no tsunami potential, we still have no reports of damage so far," an official from the agency told AFP. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and is frequently hit by earthquakes.
