T-Mobile USA gets new chief

T-Mobile USA on Wednesday named veteran US telecom executive John Legere as top executive of the US unit of German-based Deutsche Telekom.

Legere, 54, is the former chief executive of Global Crossing, and has also worked at AT&T and Dell.

"John is a talented and proven executive who brings a successful track record of leading and operating consumer- and business-focused telecommunications and technology companies," said Rene Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom.

"As T-Mobile moves forward with its strategic initiatives to improve its market position... John has obviously the right skill set to lead the business into the future."

In June, T-Mobile's chief executive Philipp Humm resigned, six months after a planned merger of the telecom group with AT&T fell apart.

AT&T in December abandoned a $39 billion effort to buy T-Mobile after US authorities moved to block the deal as anti-competitive.
