It takes just one ‘stupid fellow’ to create chaos at Bersih 4, says IGP

Bersih 4 will be disrupted with the action of just one “stupid fellow”, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar was quoted as saying in The Star Online today. He said when large numbers of people gather during the rally tomorrow, anything could happen. “Anything can happen. One stupid fellow may cause (all the) chaos,” he was quoted as saying. The Bersih 4 rally will be held tomorrow and Sunday for 34 hours in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. Asked if the police was worried about public safety, Khalid said that was why the police wanted the organiser, Bersih 2.0, to change the venue. “Of course. That is why in the beginning we negotiated with them to change the place. “But they still insisted on doing it there, knowing all the issues and problems that will be faced by them and us,” he said. Khalid added that from past Bersih events, traders in the area had to close their shops to make way for the rally as they could not conduct their business in peace. “Now they have to be closed for three days (including National Day), and they are forced to face losses,” he said. Opposition lawmakers had been warning that agents provocateurs would be out to sabotage the event. They have urged the police to ensure the safety of rally participants who will be gathering in peace. The Bersih 4 rally, which has been declared illegal by the police, is also happening this weekend at other major cities around the world. The rally will be pressing for institutional reform, the freedom to protest, measures to save the economy and a clean government and political system. – August 28, 2015.
