UPDATED 10:50pm 20 Dec 20120. Adds SBS Transit's statement.

A one-hour disruption on the North East Line (NEL) was caused by a brake problem at one of the trains, said transport operator SBS Transit.

In a statement, the company said that at 4:03pm, a train heading towards HarbourFront was immobilised by a self-activating emergency brake while approaching Serangoon Station, and remained that way despite attempts to reset it.

A rear train was then deployed to push the faulty train to the platform at Serangoon Station so about 200 commuters could alight.

In order that the faulty train could be taken off the main line, service was disrupted between Punggol and LIttle India stations while train service could continue between HarbourFront and Dhoby Gaut stations.

At 5:03pm service from HarbourFront towards Punggol resumed and by 5:06pm service in the other direction was fully restored, the company recounted.
