Transformers ride leaves passengers stranded again

Passengers of the new Transformers ride at Universal Studios Singapore were left stranded in a dark tunnel on Sunday morning after the ride encountered a glitch, its second fault since the new attraction opened in December last year.

At about 10:55am, the lights went out and the capsule containing passengers stopped abruptly after entering a tunnel and turned back to face the entrance, said one of the affected passengers.

Joshua Gouw, 23, who took the ride with four other friends, told Yahoo! Singapore, “We were stuck in the pitch dark. The lights were off, then a warning sounded to remain seated.”

After the warning, the lights came back on but the electronic screen in the ride went off. Another warning sounded a while later, informing passengers that the ride would be unable to continue due to a technical malfunction.

“We were all quite chill about it,” said Gouw, referring to the other passengers in the ride, although he added that some Indian nationals in the front row seemed worried.

The party was stranded in the ride for about 15 minutes until operators arrived to release them. They were led out to the emergency exit through the tracks, he recounted.

The ride resumed operations about an hour later.

No apology or explanations were offered after the fault. Instead, coupons allowing passengers to cut the queue for some rides were handed out, Gouw said.

The incident, however, has not dampened Gouw’s enthusiasm for the ride. “I would go back again since it’s the newest attraction,” he said.

When contacted by Yahoo! Singapore to comment on the incident, assistant director of communications for Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) Robin Goh said guests in the queue at the time were asked to leave the attraction and enjoy other rides in the park while the cause of the delay was assessed.

He added that the ride is "highly technological" and that RWS has been pleased with its reliability.

This is the second time the Transformers ride has encountered a fault. The ride, which took almost four years to build, was grounded for about 45 minutes on its opening day due to a technical glitch.

I don't get it why minor faults like these have to create such a massive commotion and lead everyone back to SMRT track faults again, I am Singaporean too and not exactly pro PAP but I do accept the fact that accident happen; just like how your laptop or mobile phones can go faulty once in awhile, and it is out of our control.

@ Shermin, 50 comments 21 hours after the article was published and 6 replies in the "top most replied" comment sure doesn't sound anything like "a massive commotion" to me. And why shouldn't this lead us back to SMRT again, especially since this is really still so fresh in our mind?

Even our Universal Studios ride has an automated system "informing passengers that the ride would be unable to continue due to a technical malfunction", but our SMRT system hasn't. If this isn't this embarassing, I don't know what is.....

I was there in the queue, the ride was back about an hour. They did make the annoucement about every 15mins or so. Also given out an one time express coupon to those affected ppl. Nothing much to complaint, enjoying every mins there.

Come on lets get WITH REALITY, so many Singaporeans on this page well on saying that on every topic page are so negative, the transformer ride is one of a kind high tech and will have some problems at start up, if you look at how much all the rides are used at Universal and the millions of people that have had the pleasure of the rides a few problems here and there is nothing to lose sleep over, my feelings also go out to the managment and maintenance teams on the SMRT systems these people work very hard and long hours to make sure millions of Singaporeans can travel to work each day and when the system falls down instead of the Singaporeans understanding that some times things dont run smoothly and should support the SMRT teams THEY WANT TO FIRE THEM, in your every day life at home and at work problems occur all the time so why is it not acceptable for Universal and SMRT to have the same, I am very proud to have the privalage of working / living in Singapore it is a great country if only the majority of Singaporeans thought the same you dont know when you have it good. ANGRY EX PAT WORKER!!

If the fares were not increased with unjustifiable reasons, I am sure we will not complain about the breakdowns of SMRT.

SMRT like that, Transformer ride also stranded people in dark tunnel without apology or explanation! Second time disrupted still spokesperson dare say `RWS has been pleased with its reliability'. Looks like complacency is very infectiious!!

This is not the second incident, I was stuck with the ride for about 10mins on 7th Jan 2012, in the morning. Same thing no explaination, only hand out express ticket for one ride per person. Total disappointment!
