Not content to let US carrier AT&T steal all the news headlines with its acquisition of T-Mobile, rival carrier Sprint announced it will soon become the first carrier to offer its customers the Google Voice experience on their cell phones.
The deal means Sprint customers will be able to use their existing phone number as their Google Voice number while avoiding the associated number porting issues and the $20 number porting fee.
Google Voice lets consumers use one number to ring up to six of their phones and has a voicemail service that works like email, transcribing voice messages into text which can be read or listened to online.
"Sprint subscribers now have access to all the benefits of Google Voice behind their existing mobile number without the need for porting or, if they already have a Google Voice number, they can display that number from their Sprint phone without the need for a separate application," said Dave Girouard, president at Google in a March 21 statement.
Google Voice can also be used with phones on rival US networks such as AT&T and Verizon, however, the number porting process can be quite involved for users planning to keep their existing phone number.
Sprint will be demonstrating Google Voice integration at the Sprint Innovation Station Lounge at CTIA Wireless on March 23 at 1PM Eastern time.
